I’m proud to announce that the Maemo community is one of 150 organization out of 395 accepted in this year Google Summer of Code :)

I would like to thank the Maemo mentors and backup mentors and everybody that helped with ideas, reviews and other small things.

The Maemo ideas list still’s open, you can give  new ideas for possible Maemo GSoC projects in the next couple of weeks.
Let’s hope a great Summer of Code for the Maemo community :)

Video: Maemo 5 Alpha

A lot of people in the Maemo community asked for a Maemo 5 video showing the new Maemo UI, so here is one :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiNF4C1p030

The application manager doesn’t work for me, and the Fremantle extras-devel repository doesn’t list the available packages trough the web, so I only showed in the video the apps that I know that are already in the repository.

The deadline for submit organization applications for Google Summer of Code is approaching, so is time to move on. We already have a good number of possible mentors, but will be awesome if a few more appear, it will increase the chances of the Maemo community be chosen as a mentoring organization and also can increase the number of projects assigned to the Maemo community. So if you like Maemo and GSoC, go read this page and send some feedback for us in the next couple of days.

We also want more possible project ideas, some criticism to the current ideas will be welcomed too :)

More information about Maemo@GSoC can be found here.

QTablet

I found this project yesterday on IRC and I think it deserves some publicity :) .

QTablet is a fully Qt and QGraphicsView based application framework which main target is internet tablets such as N810. It provides QLauncer for launching applications, Home screen called the Wall and Pager for changing between two virtual desktops and placeholders for minimized application. QTablet uses also Qt Animation Framework for doing transitions between Wall, QLauncher and Pager.

Check out the video, it features virtual desktops, cool animations (without openGL :)) and is also possible to launch hildon apps inside the QT framework. At the moment the installation isn’t straightforward, but deserves a try at lest :) .

The Maemo community is organizing a dinner during Fosdem (probably Saturday night), if you have plans to attend Fosdem conference, feel free to add your name to the attendees table, and let us know if your are interested in the Maemo dinner and what are your prefered night(s).

We also need some help of people from Brussels or nearby, in order to find a central place with fair prices to host the Maemo dinner, suggestions ?? All the help is appreciated :)  .

Mozilla just announced the release of Fennec alpha 2 for the N810, you can found the release notes and how to install this browser in your tablet here.

After a few tests it seems a little bit faster that the first Fennec release,  but it still a little bit far from the MicroB performance in my opinion.

Eduroam on Maemo

A few days ago I tried to connect my n810 to my University wifi network (WPA-TKIP-EAP-PEAP-MASCHAPv2), but after following the Linux tutorial for the eduroam network, the device discovered the network, but can’t connect to it.

After a few tests I discovered a way to get my table connected to the eduroam networks.

Here is a little tutorial for the OS2008 with all system updates:

First you have to install a certificate for the network, go to Settings -> Control panel -> Certificate manager and click in import. My university provide two different certificates (.pem and .cer) only the .cer works in maemo.

After the certificate is correctly installed, go to Connectivity -> Connections and create a new network, following the steps below.
