AGTL for Meego/Harmattan/N9: Beta 1

AGTL brings offline geocaching to the N9, and I today present the first beta version. This means, in the next time I'll try to fix bug, but not add any new features.

This beta version brings
  • Multicache Calculation help - AGTL tries to extract calculations from the cache description and you'll be asked to enter the missing values.
  • Much improved interface and a dark theme (optional). On the OLED-Display of the N9, this saves power and it's a great for night geocaching.
  • Favorite Geocaches
  • Image view
  • Website parser update - AGTL searches for an updated website parser when you launch it.
  • and several other features.
What's left to do? When this version has become stable (i.e. when it has no major bugs left), I'll add
  • Offline Maps
  • Attributes
  • Augmented Reality View (I disabled this in the current version due to some bugs)
  • Handling of archived caches (Currently the "archived" status of a geocache is not shown anywhere)
Download the beta version here or wait until it appears in the Ovi store. If you downloaded it to the N9, click on the file and follow the instructions. Otherwise, enable developer mode. Run devel-su in the terminal to become root, then run dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/Downloads/agtl-beta-1.deb (change the path accordingly).

Please report bugs to github and only to github (otherwise I may lose track of the bugs). Please try to provide an output log of the program run. You can start AGTL by running agtl-meego in the terminal. If you run agtl-meego > errorlog.txt 2>&1 it will create a file errorlog.txt containing valuable information for bug hunting.

As always, donations are very welcome. AGTL will stay free (as in beer) also when it hits the Ovi store. Maybe I'll add a donate version to the store (with exactly the same features/support as the free version).

It's finally here! AGTL brings offline geocaching to the N9. Well, not completely: The map is not stored offline right now, but this feature will arrive eventually. This is an Alpha version, meaning there will be bugs. However, I already went geocaching with it and it worked!

AGTL features several cool features: AGTL for N9/Harmattan: Augmented Reality view
  • Compass view
  • Map view
  • All details and images, the last 20 logs
  • Writing fieldnotes
  • Of course, some settings
  • And best of it all: A unique augmented reality view!
Download the alpha here. If you downloaded it on the N9, click on the file and follow the instructions. Otherwise, enable developer mode. Run devel-su in the terminal to become root, then run dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/Downloads/agtl-alpha.deb (change the path accordingly).

Please report bugs to github and only to github. Please try to provide an output log of the program run. You can start AGTL by running agtl-meego in the terminal. If you run agtl-meego > errorlog.txt 2>&1 it will create a file errorlog.txt containing valuable information for bug hunting.

Please consider a donation if you like AGTL. It will stay free (as in beer) also when it hits the OVI store, although rewriting the UI for Meego took a lot of hours in the last weeks.

A few days ago, version 0.8.0.3 of the Advanced Geocaching Tool hit the repositories. This version is also available for the Openmoko Freerunner.

It fixes a couple of minor bugs which were found in the versions before. It also includes a new feature to set a default text for fieldnotes.

Setting a default text Writing a new Fieldnote If you're using the N900 and if you have extras-testing enabled, please vote for the application to get the update into extras.

And if you want to buy me a beer or two (via PayPal), please feel free to do so :-)

Version 0.8.0.0 of the Advanced Geocaching Tool has arrived for the N900 and the Openmoko Freerunner. Changes include:
  • Fix downloading bug after November 2010 website change.
  • Rewritten coordinate handling.
  • Support editing and adding of coordinate calculation strings.
  • Faster map display.
The downloading bug was already fixed by an in-application update. If you're not using the extras-devel repository on your N900, please check the "about" menu in the application to get the update. This will, however, not update the whole application. The update will come to extras repository until the end of the month.

As I'm currently working on my diploma thesis, I don't have time for larger updates in the next months.

Due to a website update at geocaching.com, users of AGTL where unable to download the full details for some geocaches. I released an update just minutes ago. Users which have the extras-devel repository enabled, will get the upgrade for AGTL via the package manager. If you don't have extras-devel enabled, please click on this link (via your phone's browser) to download and install the update.

If you recently tried downloading the details for a geocache with the Advanced Geocaching Tool, you probably ran into a problem: An error message pops up, telling you that the cache cannot be downloaded.

This is due to a website update at geocaching.com. Users which have the extras-devel repository enabled, will get an upgrade for AGTL via the package manager. If you don't have extras-devel enabled, please click on this link (via your phone's browser) to download and install the update.

If the update works for you, please vote for the package.

AGTL 0.6.0 is here!

Version 0.6.0 of the Advanced Geocaching Tool has just been uploaded to Extras-Devel.

What's new in this release?
  • Sun Indicator. Because the N900 doesn't have a built in magnet compass, the display for the direction to the geocache is not always accurate, especially when one is not moving. Therefore, there's a small sun icon in the compass view. If you align the "real" sun with the icon, the direction to the geocache is correct, even when standing still.
  • Better Coordinate Input. I played around with various coordinate input alternatives and found that the best one is the one from the legacy AGTL. Geocaching on the N900: Coordinate input
  • Variable map size. As requested by a lot of users, you can now have the map displayed in double size to increase readability. It looks ugly, though.
  • Changing geocache coordinates. Ever solved a mystery geocache and now wishing to place the icon of the geocache to the spot of the solution? This is now possible by selecting a coordinate and clicking set as main coordinate.
  • Increase of the overall speed. SQLite transactions where a bit of a bottleneck, .
  • No more out of bounds coordinates. Never get lost again in "Here Be Dragons" land. Scroll from Russia to America without going through Europe and the Atlantic Ocean :-)
  • Browser links. You can now open the geocache page, the "post new log" page and the list of all logs via a link in the details tab.
  • Proper no-fix handling. Until now, AGTL doesn't show you when it lost its GPS fix. This is essentially a shortcoming of the liblocation in maemo, but I found way to work around it. You will now see immediately when the signal is lost.
  • Bug fixes. - as always :-)
As there were some people contacting me if they can donate some money in return for AGTL, I now accept donations.

Version 0.6.0 of the Advanced Geocaching Tool has just been uploaded to Extras-Devel.

Update 1: There was a bug preventing some users from starting the application. A bug fix release, Version 0.6.1, is on its way.

Update 2: There was another bug, also preventing startup of the application. If you have version 0.6.1 and it doesn't start, open the Terminal application and type: mkdir ~/.agtl and press return - this should fix it until version 0.6.2 arrives
