There have been no nominations. Let's extend the nomination period and the
voting (if necessary) for a week.

Quite possibly. If it turns out no one wants to do the council job any more
then I think it is time to take stock and ask the community what they do want.

Personally I find the forums and mailing lists useful. However, much more
important to me are the repositories -- a single place to go looking for
packages if I need them. How big are the current repositories and how much
traffic do they get? The Community SSU is also an extremely valuable project.
And the Nokia flash images are also critical.

Maybe there are volunteers to provide portions of this infrastructure? Not
necessarily under maemo.org any more but at least in centralised places.

Or maybe not -- in which case we are all on our own. I guess it is time I
mirrored all the repos I care about onto my home system ready for when they go
away.

While every ounce of my being says "please no" to this idea -- and most of you know my history with all of you. My gut says it's time.

There are more important things to put our time into (said with a tear).

Always maemo,

Hi Graham

We have already started plans to centralize open source parts of the
community at www.maemocommunity.org. Repos are first priority, then wiki,
the forum is tricky. Input on value of community OBS for
harmattan/fremantle/diablo would be appreciated at this point. Open for
discussion and volunteers are definitely wanted. I would also check first
to make sure that someone hasn't already mirrored the repos as discussed
previously on the forum (sorry, don't have a link at the moment) as a
safeguard against them.

My opinion is that this does not moot maemo.org council quite yet. It is
possible we will have a Nokia official website at maemo.org and start an
unofficial community website at maemocommunity.org. Perhaps some resource
sharing is possible. It would be best to still have a council still tasked
with communicating with Nokia since there is stuff left to sort out with
maemo.org.

So I will extend the time period to make and accept council nominations to
the ML. Please feel free to discuss these other things on a different
thread.

Rob

Who is "we"? Where's the discussion? How do people get involved?

BTW, it's probably not a great start when the website features "Meamo" [sic].

Agreed. However, it would be nice to see some more communication from
the current council; rather than all these things only being mentioned
at the end of the term.

Cheers,

Andrew

Why the need to create a new Maemo site - in 2012? Apart from paying the
maintenance bill, Nokia is not doing anything at maemo.org. The cost is
mainly the extras/downloads part, which is something not trivial
(neither cheap) to replicate elsewhere.

What is the reason in moving away from maemo.org?

If the reason is the declining energy then splitting away to a new
project is almost a suicide.

If the reason is a need to move forward to new trends then why not
jumping directly to existing projects and communities leading those
trends. There is no lack of interesting yet half-backed initiatives
needing more flesh and voices for consolidation.

And still... maemo.org has in place many elements that other projects
would wish to have. With some perspective I believe the problem is to
define a project around a brand in a time and industry when brands can
be so volatile. The core interest of maemo.org is defined by "mobile +
open + Linux" and the core assets of this community are great discussion
+ support + software.

If I would change anything in maemo.org I would go in the direction of
widening the scope to "mobile + open + Linux", keeping the current angle
on Nokia products but opening explicitly to other targets - making them
feel home. Then the infra behind http://apps.formeego.org is almost the
best kept secret in the "mobile + open + Linux" community. Some
connection would be beneficial for everybody.

At most I would go for a rename/rebrand, leaving "Maemo" behind and
embracing a concept that doesn't depend on any product name.

PS: Is there a thread at talk.maemo.org where I can re-post this? The
current active community follows a lot more the forum than this list, I
believe.

Hi

I agrea with QG' post , fragmentation caused so many side effects ,
like if noone learn ...

"Why do people say MeeGo is dead?"
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=82926

"The End is Coming: What do we do next?"
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=75782&&page=38

"MeeGo forum? (maemo.org round)"
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=44977

So far maemo still exists and I guess once meltemi devices will show
up, the community infrastructure will be ready...

But If the community should evolve into something larger like "mobile
open linux" ("MoOpLi" )
It may be good to consult existing communities like openmoko, mer,
tizen, replicant ?
and try to design something decentralized then future proof etc
I guess elinux wiki could be a good place to bootstrap something

Else It may became just other marketing suicide plan ...

I guess the same questions applies to meego.com

Regards
