TMO forums donated to Hildon Foundation

Re: TMO forums donated to Hildon Foundation

Hi Reggie,

Yes, the servers that Nokia has offered to be donated are not available and
the migration of other parts of Maemo infrastructure is dependant on
Nemein's support.

So the option that is under discussion is to migrate the forums to any
other hosting provider that we could afford at this moment.

As per today, we don't have yet a new designated administrator for TMO,
either volunteer or paid.

Thanks.

Ivan,

Can you define "any other hosting provider"? Which providers are you
currently looking at, if you don't mind asking. You are looking at a
dedicated server, right?

Thanks.

Re: TMO forums donated to Hildon Foundation

Hi Reggie,

We are just starting to consider options, so if you have any advice or
suggestion that would be highly appreciate.

For sure that it must be much cheaper than the current solution, but I'm
not sure about the convenience of having a dedicated or virtual server.

In one hand a dedicated server would be a better long term solution, but if
we need to move the forums to a different place in a near future, it might
be better to have it virtualised.

Again, any thoughts are welcome.

I don't think that's a correct argument.

I know it's tempting due to the price but I would stay away from
virtual. You wouldn't know how many virtual sites/forums are running
on the same server that can affect the speed of the forum, and at the
same time how the forum can hog the other virtual sites in the same
server.

You can probably find a dedicated or cloud server for under
$200/month, with no long term contract. It might be also be a good
idea to ask around. Some members/organizations might have a dedicated
server that they don't use that much -- or maybe ask meego.com
(Intel/Nokia, Intel mostly) if they would allow maemo.org/HF to run
for a few months in their servers in OSU for free or a fee.

Aren't you the Admin of meego.com too Reggie? So wouldn't we be asking you?

Just the forum, not the server. It used to run on the same server as
TMO and later moved to the meego servers in OSU when it got
provisioned.

Seconded!

Could the Board or Council share the appropriate laws? Presumably
under whatever jurisdiction TMO, Nokia and/or Nemein (who I believe
Reggie subcontracted through) are held?

Also, the link to TMO's privacy policy that we all accepted[1] which
said the data would be subject to that jurisdiction? And that we
weren't just submitting data which was, effectively, Reggie's to do
with as he pleases?

To cut a long story short, I'm not convinced there is any issue with
data privacy laws for moving where the database is hosted, given that
where it was hosted has not played any part in the TMO administration
or has been using facing in any way shape or form! :-)

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

[1] I don't believe there is one.
