TMO forums donated to Hildon Foundation

2012-12-12 19:47 UTC
TMO <http://talk.maemo.org> forum started being part of maemo.org more than
3 years ago with funding from Nokia. Previously it was part of the web
site Internet
Tablet Talk <http://www.internettablettalk.com/>, privately founded by
Reggie Suplido and dedicated to the initial Nokia Maemo devices.

The Internet Tablet Talk <http://www.internettablettalk.com/> first
and TMO<http://talk.maemo.org/>
later, have been the glue for this amazing community that we have,
providing an efficient way of communication between developers and end
users, not just a place for discussion and comments.

Reggie has been the administrator and owner of forums since the very
beginning, and thanks to him a lot has been accomplished. However, now that
Nokia is stopping activities around Maemo and Meego, continuation of forums
was at risk.

The cost of maintenance for current
host<http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1227233#post1227233>
solution was
too expensive ($468/month) to be funded by the Hildon
Foundation<http://www.hildonfoundation.org>.
Continuing in the same way was clearly difficult so migration to a cheaper
solution was somehow mandatory.

Finally, Reggie has decided to donate the forum to the Hildon Foundation:

*"I will be stepping down as the TMO administrator effective January 1, **2013.
I have decided that I will be donating the database to the foundation."*

*"I saw my name mentioned in one of the board meetings about the possibility
of becoming the admin of maemo.org. I appreciate the offer
but I have to decline as of this time."*
*
*
>From the Hildon Foundation <http://www.hildonfoundation.org> we want to
thank Reggie for this contribution and for all the time and efforts he has
shared with us.

Now we have different constraints that affect the migration of the server:
- Lack of funds to pay a new hosting service and a vBulletin license.
Please donate <http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1303767>!
- Man power to migrate and administrate the forums. Board and Council are
conducting a survey to address it.
- Concerns about data privacy laws if we move the service from the U.S. to
Europe.

Migrating to an OSS might be doable in the near future but at this point it
could be very difficult to accomplish, as we lack resources and time.
However, if anyone with the required knowledge is interested in starting
such a project for migration, please contact with Council<council@maemo.org>
.

Hello,

There are migration tools to convert from vBulletin to SMF, for instance:

http://download.simplemachines.org/?converters;software=vbulletin

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=288034.0

AFAIK, SMF requires less resources than vBulletin, so a less powerful (and
cheaper) hosting may be enough, specially given that Maemo is (sadly) not
exactly in its brightest moment.

BTW, why doesn't Hildon Foundation join forces with Mer Project (or even
merge) ?

It all depends on the expertise of the new forum administrator(s).

>From my post at: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1227233#post1227233

"For those asking, yes a lot of the forum systems (including open
source ones) have vB migration tools. Sure, a cheaper or free forum
system can be used but think about the expertise of the volunteer who
intend to administer it (both the front and back end). Think about
daily backup, DDoS attacks, automated spammer attacks, etc. The
administrator(s) should be able to perform/monitor/avoid these 24
hrs/day.

There is also the task of creating custom plug-ins. As an example, TMO
has a custom plug-in that links with the Maemo.org membership database
so karma can be computed correctly off the members' TMO posts/thanks.
Not all forum systems have the 'Thanks' feature, so think about how
that can be supported and the thanks data migrated."

Hello,

There is a "thanks" plugin for SMF:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=710

And the 8,000 e-mails/day look like a task MailChimp or CampaignMonitor can
solve for as low as $10/month (some plugin may be required)

Afaik, sending emails could be just a matter of php script, then they may be sent from any host.

Going from zero to 8,000 mails a day without being flagged as spam may not
be that easy, even if the domain has proper DKIM and SPF records.

FYI, it's not 8000/day -- it's ~8000/week. It can be more if more
people stat using the reply via email feature.

In any case, if you are an SMF fan and have experience administering
it, propose it formally and volunteer to be the admin. Note that aside
from the plugins (e.g. thanks, maemo.org karma computation, rss to
post (used in council announcements), etc), theming skills is also
needed -- creating custom themes to have the forum look and behave
like the main site, not to mention mobile optimized themes are not
that easy to make. Maybe there are a lot of SMF fans that can help.
SMF is not my first choice though, if the free/open source forum route
is being considered.

Here's the thing, a vB license now is only about $250. Unless someone
can properly convert the data to a new platform and create a suitable
theme in 18 days (until Dec 31, 2012), I suggest to just go for vB,
hoping that a server will be ready soon, restore the database/resource
files, and it's up and running.

I haven't seen an announcement yet, but after Dec 31, TMO will most
probably be down until it gets moved to a new server. Perhaps this is
a good break for everyone from the forums. ;)

Happy Holidays.

Hi Reggie,

There was this - or did you mean some other kind of announcement?

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=88234

We have already raised more than enough money for the Vbulletin license and
for the hosting. Obviously, we have to install and configure, but is
there some reason you see we can't get this done by Dec. 31?

Do you have a list of the email address for the current tmo moderators? We
might contact them and ask them to reaffirm their willingness to continue
moderating.

Rob

Rob,

Where will the forum be hosted at? Are these the Nokia donated
servers? I had the impression that the new servers won't get setup in
time that's why I brought up the forum down time, and nothing in that
announcement mentioned about down time.

You know I won't provide personal emails but you are free to PM them
directly. Here's the list of admins, moderators, super moderators, and
spam moderators: http://talk.maemo.org/showgroups.php

Btw, who will be the new forum admin?

Reggie
