Builder now runs PR1.2 SDK with Qt 4.6 support

Hi,

I've installed the new PR1.2 SDK on the maemo.org Extras autobuilder.
Developers are encouraged to test their application in the PR1.2 SDK to
see if everything still works as expected.

If you have an application using Qt4.6, please make sure you switch to
libqt4-* instead of libqt4-maemo5-*. Qt4.6 is on the device by default in
the PR1.2 image.

Promotion to Extras-testing and Extras for applications depending on
libqt4-maemo5 will remain blocked.

I just gave it a try with my half finished image puzzle game and it seems to
be working nicely.

Is there a need to have these libraries any more now that we have a stable
version of Qt 4.6 with pr1.2?

Nokia Qt developers already wrote that libqt4-maemo5 will be reused for Qt 4.7
packages.

Can we get some insight from Qt/Nokia folks what the policy regarding
QtMobility will likely be (no obligations, of course) ? It currently builds
against 4.6, but it is unclear if it will be rebased to 4.7, will get
parallel libqtm-maemo5 packages, or something completely different?

Attila

If I understand correctly, now developers who depend on maemo.org
repositories to distribute their cannot distribute updates to users.
Users of applications in extras-devel who delete an application for some
reason cannot reinstall it. Since Nokia "does not comment on schedule of
future releases", we might remain in this state for a long time.

Similar situation exists for packages from SDK.
I have Crash Reporter installed on my n900 (I installed
it for Bug #6334). Installed version is 1.27+0m5.
Few days ago phone displayed information about available
updates; new version of Crash Reporter was uploaded to repository.
New version is 1.29+0m5, but it is not upgradeable because of missing
dependencies:
libhildon1 >= 2.2.5
lihlindonfm2 >= 1.2.28.32+0m5
libosso1 >= 2.29
libpixman-1-0 >= 0.15.16

I assume that if someone now would have problems with the phone,
he or she would not be able to install Crash Reporter to attach
core dumps to error reports. This might make debugging harder,
esp. for lower-level problems.

I strongly (but clueless) guess that 1.2 is right around the corner. Tomorrow or this week, so we can play with it over Easter :-)
It's a difficult transition period, but well worth a few days of patience.

Happy hacking :-)

Following some confusion[1][2], I've had a chat with Niels today and
the following wasn't clear (to me):

* The plan[3] affects Extras only; not -devel and not -testing.
* Extras-devel is now being fed from the PR1.2 SDK.
* This means that auto-generated libhildon dependencies are being
specified too tightly to install on devices and SDKs lower
than PR1.2 (due to the introduction of new symbols for
livesearch[4])

Niels is looking at a fix for the libhildon dependencies[6]. In the
meantime, whilst waiting for PR1.2:

* Updates to software in -devel will result in it not being
installable; and the old package will no longer be available.

* Things can be pushed to -devel and -testing, testing in
Scratchbox so that software using the new features can be in
Extras when PR1.2 finally lands.

Matan Ziv-Av mentioned the replacement of extras-devel three days ago
but didn't elaborate, and it sounded like misunderstanding.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

This is the killer. When Niels presented his plan, I didn't realise that
anything other than Qt apps would be significantly affected.

There has to be an absolute rule for SDK updates: if libhildon version
dependencies are being increased, the release **has** to be given a new
codename and a separate builder queue and all repositories. We can discuss
how long the older version autobuilder is still supported, and we can discuss
populating the new repositories from the existing ones, but there should be
no question of using the updated SDK in the existing autobuilder and
repository.

And once Qt apps start shipping to Extras (i.e. for any future releases) this
has to apply to Qt as well! And, of course, other libraries that most apps
use (glib, etc.).

Graham
