Maemo 5 gets community OS updates
The Maemo Community Council and Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh are pleased to announce the launch of the Maemo 5 Community SSU project. It is currently in a testing and elaboration phase, and your help is required.
What is it?
Seamless Software Update (SSU), is the term Nokia used to brand the over-the-air updates of Maemo.
Community Seamless Software Update (CSSU) is being developed by the Maemo community, for the Maemo community. It aims to deliver fixes which can't be delivered easily through Extras, such as core N900 packages. It won't, however, bundle software which can be installed through the Extras repositories.
It's got a presence in various Maemo forums:
- IRC: #maemo-ssu on FreeNode
- Bugs: Bugzilla, product: Extras > Maemo 5 Community SSU
- Wiki: Community SSU
- Talk: In-development Community SSU
Who is it for?
Long-term: all N900 users.
Now: power-users, developers, Nokia/Maemo/MeeGo engineers, testers, documentation writers and those willing to risk a re-flash in order to help.
How do I install it?
- Make sure you're running PR1.3, Nokia's last official Maemo 5 update. To see if you have PR1.3, go into "Settings > About product", you should see under "Version" it has the numbers beginning with "20.2010.36".
- Go to wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU using your N900 browser.
- Click on the "Install" arrow next to "Testing".
- Hildon Application Manager (HAM) will launch and will prompt with you a series of messages and warnings. Click continue and let it install the community package.
- Once done, close HAM and go into the applications menu. Look for, and launch, for "Community SSU". This will then automatically run through a series of scripts to ensure HAM will now be using community repository for updates.
- HAM will re-open and present a system upgrade called "Maemo 5 Community SSU". Once installed, your device will reboot.
These instructions are also in the wiki.
How can I help?
Can you write documentation? If so, it'd be great to flesh out the wiki page with installation instructions (to make it easy for users to install without worrying about missing a step or getting it wrong); explain more about the SSU and generally spruce up the wiki page and maintain things like the changelogs etc.
Were you involved in developing Maemo? If so, with Nokia now looking to Harmattan and MeeGo, we'd love to see your itches addressed in the Community SSU (CSSU). Have you always wanted to implement something in hildon-desktop, but Management stood in your way? We'd love to have it!
Have you written a patch for Maemo? Raise a bug and let's get it in the CSSU.
Are you a developer? There are numerous patches floating around for hildon-desktop; but they can't be included in the CSSU until they are configurable (via gconf) and default to off.
Want to test? Not only testing this release, but writing test scripts so that each release of the CSSU can get sanity checked before unleashing it into a "stable" repo for end-users. How do we do it? What should be tested? How is it organised?
Want to organise? There's still lots of process left to organise; hopefully there'll be bugs and features to triage and manage in bugs.maemo.org as well as communication of the testing, releases and end-user readiness of the CSSU.
Comments:
thanks a lot , after yesterdays update, everything is working fine!!!! potratit mode: MENU SETTINGS APP MANAGER STATUS BAR and MOST OF the applications!!!
I'm not sure where to put a lot of the various comments, but just a couple here. I don't have a hildon-desktop directory and so no transitions.ini file to edit (for new zaxisrotation etc). Has this been deleted by the lastest 12.1 update, or was it never there?
Jezz KnightKarma: 7 Really like what's going on here so keep up the work. Just wanted to see if anyone's getting the long pauses when opening up email boxes or individual emails. Not sure if this is a bug and worth logging or just part of the general hiccups with modest.
facing same problem here

"From changelog:
hildon-status-menu * Added portrait mode support"
It means, that the only thing that's changed, is the menu you can invoke by tapping the status bar (clock, status & services icons) is going to be shown in portrait mode instead of horizontal if you try to open it while, for example, in the phone app.
Many thanks to all the people involved in this great project! I found no problems yet, everything works like a charm...
is there any chance to add video calling over the 3G, it would just be great to have it working
portrait mode is great but still looking forward for the stable version...
Whoops... sorry! Everything works fine. Accelerometer somehow didn't turn it.
From changelog:
hildon-status-menu * Added portrait mode support
And indeed, the system status menu works in portrait mode.
This update enable portrait mode??? Strange... doesn't work for me.
well i am using it and liking so far. email notification being bugged actually make it less annoying lol.
and it have a potrait hildon status bar, make live easier, now if could get desktop, keyboard, apps menu and "open apps" window on potrait i could forget about nitdroid
It might be totally unrelated, but after the installing the updates, I cannot ssh to my phone from the computer...
I've spotted the problem with mapping the dashboard to the focus button through shortcutd - it seems that mapping other functions to the same button works properly, so I guess something got changed in the way the dashboard may be called.
I've noticed reboot is a little slower: widgets etc take longer to appear on the desktop. Fix for the shortcut keys works a charm, though. I am having problems with updates, though. The notification appears (the orange "!") and I'm taken to the App manager, but then I have to go back to the notification, press it again and only then does the update/installation process start.
Installation went smooth. It looks like everything works except CTRL-backspace.
@Andre
I was expecting to use the portrait mode not work for me
thanks for answering
I only noticed that my N900 works a little bit faster. That's all
currently Nokia only has access to my device or info about it (probably through my activities and info stored on OVI). WHO else will now be able to access to my device after this update?
how des the privacy control change?
somebody help...after install the update i can't watch videos in .avi format... i use the sib player it work's fine before, but after this update the video don´t work well, brakes, it's possible to watch the video but nothing like before this update...
ps. sorry by my english
The app manager is fast and improved and the UI as well...thanks
@Andre Klapper
regrets , but am not a devel, so i thought after this update i will be able yo use full potrait mode, i mean MENU, Messaging, Email, like a normal android mobile!!!!
Only thing spotted so far is that when opening a web shortcut from the desktop, the nokia web browser launches as well (just showing the bookmarks)
I've installed the update and the message "operating system successfully updated". What version in "about" should I be seeing? From what I can see, it's the same 20.2010.36-2 as before. Can I assume this has not updated, in that case?
@Tomasz: ctrl+shift+p not working is a known issue and has been reported in bugs.maemo.org.
@ADITYA: You cannot manually activate portrait mode because it is automatically. If it does not work for you, be WAY more specific.
@Agustín: "but the cell does not get the improvements" - What exactly did you expect and what exactly did not happen?
I had much better success on N900 with http://j.mp/communityssu than with the button. Not sure why, but now it works for me.
Thank you everybody for all the work.
I installed the update over four times and did not get any results. I followed the tutorial and installed correctly, the phone restarts, but the cell does not get the improvements in the update. in the stable version that can be fixed? hopefully thank you for your work, which is for all N900 users Greetings from Argentina (Google translation)
i got it installed on first attempt!!! but does it really work potrait mode???
@Chad, for the N800 and N810 there is a corresponding (and slightly older) effort to do the same; which is already suitable for end-users:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Diablo_Community_Project
Same problem here, it didn't work the first time I tried. Now it looks like it works after tryign again.
@Manrique Lopez me too ... no repos installed and no script in the app menu.
what's the name of the binary, so I can run it from the terminal?
First impression, after the installation stopped working shortcut CTRL + backspace. But the menu scrolls smoothly.
So this is awesome, i don't want to sound obnoxious or anything, but thank god there is always this forum when NOKIA hangs the towel! Im installing it, but im wondering, can i still get official NOKIA updates? if ever; PR1.4 or PR1.5 comes around?
Thanks again :)
Thanks guys for this effort. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

I too want to thank all that contribute/participate at the moment I am not quite comfortable with reflashing my device so I will wait for the for the "long-term" version. Essentially I am not sure how to reflash with a 64bit debian laptop but I could learn. Anyway keep up the good work looking forward to the community build
Andrew,
I just wanted to publicly thank you for getting all of this organized and launched!
@José; it's no more possible than it was before. However if someone did the work it would now be easier to ship it to users.
does this mean a protrait desktop/keyboard mode is possible?
I have tried to install it and, after acepting to download it, HAM did nothing. Now, it isn't installed and HAM says there isn't any available repository, any installed software. I have "Faster Application Manager", and it seems to work. What could be failing with HAM?
