GPE and Pimlico

This is a question of curiosity.

In asking for recommendations to substitute the sadly lacking built in
contacts tool on the Nokia tablets I seem to have received more nods to
GPE tools over the Pimlico tools.

As I have tried out both tools, the Pimlico tools are better looking,
much more tablet friendly, more polished, and seem much more useful than
the GPE tools. At least from my short evaluations so far.

I realize these statements are subjective to the user, and wonder if I
am missing something else that GPE has over Pimlico?

I haven't heard of or tried Pimlico, have heard of and use GPE,
primarily for it's calendar and todo utility. This doesn't mean one
is better than another. Just GPE was there first and probably has more
users. I may take a look at Pimlico, just to see what it's like. I
just got thru playing around with a couple of the media players for the
same reason -- see which one I like the best. It's one of the nice
things about the tablet is it's 'free' base of apps.

Without doing research on Pimlico features is one feature I really
like about GPE is one can display the GPE calendar as a 'transparency'
on the desktop (behind or in front of RSS feeds). Syncing with GPE
Calendar Google via Erming is also nice...

I am still not sure of either one, it just seems that on my early
impressions that Pimlico makes a better first impression.
I will pick something eventually.

How did you setup the transparency in GPE?

I did try Pimlico contacts before settling on GPE, but I'm afraid it's
been long enough that I don't remember the details. IIRC it was because
the import I needed either wasn't possible with Pimlico or was less
successful and lost more of the fields.

I have to point out that with the exception of the very last phrase, the
rest all applies to the built-in app. Appearances can be deceiving.
Slick looks aren't always backed up by functionality...

I've tried both Pimlico suite and GPE suite. I also got the feeling
that the Pimlico Suite was more "Tablet-friendly", but GPE looked a
much more mature application to me.

I was quite concerned for a while about sync'ing my calendar and
contacts between my mobile phone, my laptop and the tablet, and that
was possible with Pimlico and syncevolution [1], because Pimlico seems
to be using the Evolution Data Server [2]. As the original contacts
app also uses it, I think that all the changes made in one app where
reflected in the other. There was no way to sync tasks as far as I
remember.

However, Pimlico support for the tablets seems quite "abandoned", so
if you really want to choose it, you shouldn't expect the suite to
update too much.

If you can live using Google calendar as your main backend, so you
sync both your desktop and your tablet with it, I think GPE is for
you, using Erminig. If you don't rely on Google for that, you should
keep in mind that Syncevolution still needs a SyncML Server. Copied

There are several options for choosing a SyncML server:

* using a web service like ScheduleWorld or myFUNAMBOL which store
the data to be synchronized on a server and provide access to it via
SyncML
* installing a SyncML server like the free one from Funambol on
one's own server
* installing a SyncML server on the desktop

I too had never heard of Pimlico (apart from the London suburb of the
same name, and the old Ealing comedy "Passport to Pimlico" :-) but it
doesn't appear in my Apps list, so presumably there is a repo to add.

However, GPE is working fine for me right now, apart from its
incompatibility with the LCARS theme (which I posted about before) and
the fact that it cannot properly handle timezones.

This last one is a close-to-showstopper for anyone who travels a lot: I
need to be able to put in my flight and set the timezone of the arrival
time (and the times of my meetings in the destination zone) so that when
I arrive and change the timezone in the (poor) Clock applet, they all
show up correctly. This was available even on the otherwise lowly PIM
apps in my old Sharp Zaurus.

The Clock applet also needs a boost: it can only handle two zones, home
and away, which is not good.
