Enable root access, via the "sudo gainroot" command
"sudo gainroot" will work without requiring you to enable R&D mode.

The first app a power user needs.
to mostafa samir: dear dude, there are many ways to connect to internet, use a free wifi once to installl or use ur SIM card GPRS to reach internet, if u donot have access to wifi or GPRS of your sim card (which in unusual), just borrow some friend's sim card or go to a internet cofea to use wifi anyway if u cannot figure it out how to connect to internet, just leave installing programs like this bz u really need more basic information? As some buddies said it's usefull but not completely necessary and they explained how to use the replacement. Anyway this is a very nice shortcut passage that make it easy so I admire it, use it, u won't be regret, enjoy guys. U know what makes me happy whit N900? bz it's endless for new programs and more development. never u can say: that's it, i'm done with installing all i need, there'll be coming usefull stuff like this!
how do i use this apps? please i need a full detail of that thanks
Must Have!
great app
The first thing to install!
This is the first thing a new user has to install :)
very useful app!
Is there any way to install rootsh without using app manager or atleast without requiring internet connection? My nw has proxy and app manager does not work with proxy right now?
got root!
Tout possesseur de N900 doit avoir cette application !
Awesome!
This is the must have application!
must have this app, simple and light... ;)
This package is the reason why people buy the N900. ;)
Did what it has to do!
I use 'root' instead... works perfectly :)
A must have to make changes with xterm easily.
plz i need ur help i dont have internet connection in my n900 can i install rootsh in another way ?
I am sure 'rootsh' is a wonderful thing. If I only would not always get the following error message: "Unable to install 'rootsh'"
I downloaded rootsh 1.5 via appl.manager. log-file says: apt-worker: Not handling unrelated package recorder. required disk space: 3156
thank you for your help! kind regards from freezing germany j.
The one, the only, the original. The best reason to own a Nokia tablet/phone - and in the official repository no less.
I personally use OpenSSH to get root, and enable sudo for use on the device itself (2 characters shorter than rootsh and uniform between Maemo and other systems), but I still applaud the existence of rootsh. More ways to get root.
I can haz r00t :-D
got root!
got root?
My first choice.
Simple, light, powerful and easy to install, a must have for Xterm users
A must have.
Works perfectly without any problems. A must have app for any N900 user
There have been several more-or-less user-friendly schemes over the years to allow root access In Maemo... this one, which appeared I think in Maemo4, is the simplest and easiest to date. Anyone who uses xterm should have it !

Not sure why you need this? The OpenSSH package installs SSH and forces a root password change. When you SSH in you can get root that way. This may be useful for local (xterm) usage, but you could always ssh to localhost for that too?
Nice idea. Just don't think it's needed for the N900.
