Scripts to run Debian applications easily in Maemo
(including OpenOffice, Gimp, LXDE and Java applet support) for users not familiar with the command line.
NOTE: A large image file must be downloaded and installed before this package will work! You will need approx. 2.5 GB free in either your MyDocs directory or your MicroSD card. BE AWARE: Downloading the approx. 300MB file and extracting it can take more than an hour and you will need a fast connection!
Instructions and an automated installer are provided in the package.

this is simply Awesome! Thank you!
Excellent app!
Thanks!
Perfect! There is any place like the downlaod area in the maemo.org (http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/) where you can see the aplications available?
my goddddddddddddddd.....my n900 is let put to repair....
Unknown izma error!!! HELP
This is fantastic - but for most users perhaps more as potential and technology demostration as real added value. After all, the shell and OpenOffice require a magnifigation glass to use... But for some, this will open new doors in pocket-size computing.
Working like a charm here, time to explore all options with this new version ED, credits to developers
Great piece of software. Works like a charm. Many thanks to the author.
Very useful to run Debian programs which are not yet ported to Maemo. Some keyboard focus issues persist at this time which require running utility (but included) programs and using not-always-easy-to-remember keyboard combinations.
This is the biggest boost to N900's power I've found, thank you Qole Very Much!
hi use this 'app' useful for a newbie like me? Never used linux before. Doe o would like to have and use more apps/programs than the orginal nokia software updater offers. I'm inpressed by your skills in programing, for me it's just letters and numbers i cant really understand more than 'format c: /s" :)
Did someone test this package positively with the power kernel ?
Thank you very much for this excellent work. Among a lot more, Easy Debian on the N900 enables real programming, using tools like CLISP, Maxima and GNUplot all in the same environment.
Great! Thanks Mr Qole
Great work!
Hi there everybody.
I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I installed the easy-debain app and ran the image installed. The xtrem opened and downloaded the 300MB file. Then extracted it, 1/2 way though it failed with a error I missed. Then I noticed my /home is 100% full. I can not find the original file, something .ext.deb or something that is suppose to extract to the 2gb space needed. I did an du on the /home and saw that the "." is 302MB, but I can not fine anything to delete there?.
Can someone please, please assist? Thanks very much!

Great app, but I have some problem.. Everything worked fine untill the menu bar disapeared and panel bar started to blink( it apears and disapears constantly) in lxde. I tried to delete the image file and download it once more, but it didn't worked... any ideas how to resolve the problem?
Absolutely a great app, having OpenOffice on my N900 is absolutely great! :-D However i had some problems downloading the Debian image directly from the device, so i've downloaded it from my PC typing the address you see when launching the image installer and then copied into the MyDocs directory, launched the Install Debian Image program and everything worked great ;-)
Hope this will help who had some problems installing it!
There is extensive documentation in the wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian
please help me, i downloaded it and see in my apps alot of icons what i shuld do and what this debian do ?!
How do I use Easy Debian? I have been playing with it but not much I know. Some come to my rescue please.
I'm Love Debian
Any plans to generate an image for Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix ?
great.i need it.
Excellent work, qole!
Works great for me on my N900...
Thanks!
I really appreciate the work that was put in to make this available. Now I can get a full bash or tcsh shell, and not be annoyed by busybox's limitations. This is the app that makes your N900 into a full gnu/linux machine.
This is still in Beta stage, so I shouldn't complain. I think software needs some polishing. I had problems unpacking the Main version. It failed due to LZMA unknown error. It's weird that Sweden version didn't have this problem.
I could start Debian with LXDE and use x-terminal, and Synaptic package manager. OpenOffice crashed during start - so, I can recover two files which "I" was editting but I hadn't had started the software! I installed Abiword and it also didn't work.
I keep fingers crossed for the project because I would like to have Debian on my N900. Good luck.
Une humiliation pour l'iPhone, croyez-moi xD ! Ce programme est lourd et moyennement facile à installer mais permet de lancer une Debian ! Au final, le N900 devient un PC !
Amazing.
Nice Application, would have preferred the menu items were a bit larger than they are now.
What can i say... Alan you legend!!! This is THE must have app - but the ability to run open office and gimp.... second to none...
great! and useful!
Best n900 hack :-)
Having OO.o and GIMP on the N900 is killer.
If there was an award for most useful application, I'd say this takes the cake.
with the new, updated version, it even works perfectly fine with a Swiss Keyboard Layout :D
@Throatwobbler Mangrove yes it is possible, in fact that's what I did… here's a full tutorial if anyone needs one: http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian
Great application! I've got question - is it possible run new version of OpenOffice(3.2). It's much faster than 3.0 version.
This sounds amazing, but I'm scared of downloading a "large image file" over a 2G network :( Is it possible to download it to my PC and put it into the device via cable?
Hi there just downloaded and installed it…works like a charm! the only (and kinda major) problem is that I can't type anything with my hardware keyboard! it has a Swiss Layout…could that be the problem? I really don't know how to make my hardware keyboard work. I would really appreciate any answer! Thx
This is the most useful tool for Maemo5 !!!
Didn't install for me. It put lots of links in my application that crash as soon as they start up. The Debian Image In application (engrish?) downloaded a large file, but it says "Extracting... this will take a long time", then an error pops up saying "TAR Error Bzip2 unknown error".
?
Thank you.
As a noob, using synaptic and having a debian desktop this easy is great! n900 rules ;-)
2 David B: ___Just open lens cover (camera) and then close it - in result Debian with others applications appeared
This really enhances the power of the N900! It finally gave me network printing support by installing cups within the Debian system.
it works just excellent except that cpu mem aplet always shows that the cpu is running at full power even when I reboot the phone and everything is loaded properly the cpu still works. Htop shows that ther are two processes running and usually ther was just one. The ones which use the cp most are: usr/lib/tracker/tracker-indexer usr/lib/traker/tracker-extract
If this could be intergrated into the Maemo OS so the Apps could be run from/in the standard Maemo desktop rather than a 2nd desktop that would be excellent !!
