And here goes a new release of the Maemo packages for the great InfoZIP archiving tools!
There are a number of improvements over the old releases this time.
1. Version 3.0 of the great InfoZIP archiver is here! Yes, you read it correctly, at the beginning of June 2008 there was a new release (surprise! :). The package is called zip3, and it conflicts with the zip package (e.g. you can have either zip or zip3 but not both, because they implement same commands). What's new in zip3:
- 64-bit file size support!!! (yes! on your Internet Tablet this is a must!)
- 32-bit UID/GID support (another must-have!)
- Support for split archives (-s)!
- Unicode support! The archiver will store names now as UTF-8, and convert to your system encoding when extracting (well, it's UTF-8 everywhere in Maemo, so...). You will need the (still unreleased) unzip 6.0 to unpack such names :) otherwise you'll get the old behaviour.
- bzip2 compression! This does not mean support for .bz2 files, use bzip2 for that like before. But you can compress files in .zip archives using the bzip2 algorithm! Use -Z bzip2 option to enable this. Note that you need the (still unreleased :) unzip 6.0 to extract such files, so it's more of a experimental feature.
- and as always, lots of other nifty features (and bugs, of course ... ;-)
2. The unzip_batch package has been split into its own separate package. It is called unzip-fm now (short for unzip-filemanager). unzip-fm is not yet released, Danny should have his say on the new repackaging and a few modifications I did to it (after all, it's his code ;-)
3. unzip version is 5.52-14-maemo3. It should be fixed to be really 5.52-14maemo3 but the dumb dpkg does not understand that version 5.52-14maemo3 is newer than 5.52-14-maemo2 :-(( so this will make upgrading the package impossible. So far we're sticking to the old (incorrect) version naming.
4. Icons! Yes, that's true! All released package have icons now (the official InfoZIP icon, by the way).
5. Thumb mode support! What this means? Well, for you, as a end user, this means that the package is smaller and the installed binaries are smaller (about 30%), thus it saves precious space for you to install more games and other stuff! Cool, isn't it? :-)
There are lots of changes behind the scene, our SVN now contains a complete copy of the packaging files and now it's easier than ever to build a package - be it binary or source. But for you, my dear end user, this is not very noticeable :-)
For now the packages are available only in the Maemo Extras-devel repository. If you really want to help us test it, add a new repository in the Application Manager:
Name: maemo Extras-devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
Components: free non-free
Refresh the application list and you should see the packages zip, unzip and zip3. Do not forget to disable the extras-devel repository after you install our packages - it can contain untested stuff, so don't install unless you really want it.
In a few days, I hope, we'll test the packages and promote them to Maemo Extras so that everybody can benefit from them.
