GstOpenMAX is a collaboration among Fluendo, Nokia, STMicroelectronics, TI and the open-source community, initiated by Nokia with the goal to develop a GStreamer plugin to run OpenMAX-IL components in GNOME and GStreamer applications. The new project aims to merge efforts from Bellagio project and GOmx project into one solid OMAX-IL plugin for GStreamer.
OpenMAX-IL is an industry standard that provides abstractions for multimedia processing implemented in hardware or software. Especially in embedded systems, there has been a strong need for a cross-platform API that improves the integration of multiple hardware-accelerated multimedia components, e.g. codecs, effects and mixers.
The GstOpenMAX plugin enables GNOME and GStreamer applications to seamlessly use OpenMAX-IL components. In addition, the project also provides the community with the possibility to develop cross-platform codecs, that would automatically be supported by GStreamer multimedia framework.
