A truly flexible platform might allow for "ports" of lightweight twitter applications based on webkit, with adjustable-font GUIs that can be finger-friendly to the tablet platform.

Solution #1: Gwibber might be a potential candidate

Gwibber, based on webkit, is a open-source twitter/identi.ca/laconi.ca (and many other web aggregates) client.
On linux netbooks it seems to be a stable lightweight client that doesn't tax system resources with atom processors, anyway.
Mauku is also an excellent n-series client but might need more api support for other services. A great dynamic OS will hopefully bring an opportunity for a choice of clients, but gwibber may be ready without any serious porting challenges.
