Allow SMS to be answered from any desktop PC or laptop

Posted on 2010-09-25 12:15 UTC by Oskar Welzl. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Internet & Networking.

Problem: You're at your desktop PC, the N900 is in the next room. You hear a text message (SMS) coming in. In order to answer it, you have to get up and fetch the device. Even if the N900 is in your pocket, you need to change keyboards and type an answer on the small N900 when a full-sized desktop keyboard is right in front of you.

This shouldn't be necessary. There should be a mechanism to make ingoing text messages pop up on any of your computers and let you answer them right away, without ever touching the N900.

RDS and PTY interface and player integration

Posted on 2011-01-07 06:16 UTC by nemo nowhere. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Media, User Experience, Devices.

N900 is currently capable of sending "Nokia" as RDS station name. I suggest that we expand this functionality so that it can send all types of RDS fields and PTY codes and make it into a general API.

Secondly we should enable media players to broadcast RDS info from mp3 filename or name tags.

Eventualy some one could use the interface to send sms or caller id while FM transmitter is in use.

Add support for name's phonetical transcription (furigana/yomi) in contacts

Posted on 2011-01-17 11:51 UTC by Taro Hirabayashi. Status: Under consideration

The built-in contact manager does not support the fields for the furigana (phonetical transcription) for the names in other non alphabetical languages (expecially Japanese and Chinese). The vCard standard supports these fields and it should be implemented in the built-in conctact manager.

Orientation Lock switch to hildon-status-menu

Posted on 2011-02-08 19:13 UTC by Fernando Santos. Status: Under consideration

Currently there is no way to lock the N900's UI to to horizontal mode, which gets bothersome in cases. Applications that support portrait mode often have a setting, but that's not true for all.

There should be a hildon-status-menu plugin that disbles the accelerometer for the UI when activated, much like the iOS 4 one: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/6125/iphone-ios4-lock-orientation-but-where-is-the-horizontal-lock/

I currently have a shell script that edits /etc/mce/mce.ini, removes the accelerometer entry on the Modules to load list then kills mce. It works, sometimes, except when mce doesn't return and I have to restart the phone. I'd love a less hack-ish solution to that.
