PrBoom 2.5.0-svn20091231-0maemo1

clone of the legendary first person shooter Doom Doom is a 3d shoot'em'up game, written by id Software, first released in 1993. PrBoom is a version of Doom using the Simple Direct Media layer (SDL) library, which enables it to use XFree86, OpenGL, Linux framebuffer console, GGI, SVGALib or even color or monochrome text consoles as display. There is an additional OpenGL renderer as well. PrBoom is based on MBF and LxDoom, which in turn are based on Boom, a freely available port of Doom for DOS, written by TeamTNT (http://www.teamtnt.com/). PrBoom requires an IWAD to play. A free IWAD is available in the freedoom package. You can install your commercial Doom IWADs using game-data-packager.

I believe that behavior is consistent with Doom. Until the demo starts you can press any key to pull up the start menu. Because PrBoom has enhanced demo capabilities, it requires an "Esc" (hacked to work with Backspace) to call it up.

  • After starting the app, I figured all this package did was show a auto-demo because I didn't press the backspace key. The 'Backspace' key was not intuitive.
  • Triggering the menu by pressing 'any-key' during the demo would be much better. The 'Pause' and 'Map' mode don't do much. This would align with the behavior at startup before the demo starts.

  • The quickest workaround could be to show a Hildon banner, or whatever, when Prboom is started. It could instruct the user how to change to English keyboard layout.

Nokia's localization bug is a known issue and a simple workaround exists.

It's too bad; wish they had thought their design through a bit more.

I have heard that some apps are now automatically changing the localization on startup, but that seems to be a bad idea on a multitasking device. Thoughts?

  • The menu cannot be navigated on devices without hardware up/down keys; the Fn+Left/right combinations don't work.
