This is a list of applications that users want. Applications will move from here, to ApplicationCatalog2006Wip and then ApplicationCatalog2006, if/when someone decides to develop them. Please do not put feature requests for existing applications here: for those email the application author.

MoinMoinWiki Macro: TableOfContents

System

Generic Virtual Keyboard

It'd be really great to have a virtual keyboard- xvkbd for instance- for inputting to non-Hildon/Gtk+ applications. People from the Squeak Smalltalk and Tcl/Tk communities, among others, would find this to be useful. That, or a way to control the built-in virtual keyboard without having to have a Gtk+ widget focused.

Stylus control panel

Control panel for controlling stylus behavior including minimum time that stylus must be continuously lift up before lift up is recognized. Purpose is to reduce problems of accidentally released drags.

File association control panel

Control panel for controlling which application should open what file types. Need for this increases as more applications capable of handling same filetypes comes available.

MMC-UNIONFS

Allows extending the filesystem to an MMC card and reduces writes to internal flash. Package was available for 2005, but needs updating for IT2006.

Bluetooth Headset support

Support for bluetooth headse to support music players, notifiations/alerts, and voice driven navigation(this would have to include speech rec).

Chinese Language support

It would be nice to support Chinese charater, at least for Web browser and Email application. Especially for MP3 player to be able to display the names of Chinese songs.

Japanese language support

If actual character entry is too difficult, at least being able to read kanji + kana mail + websites would be great

Bluetooth printing

This will make Nokia 770 an ideal platform for mobile sales / services applications. (Printed sales quotes / invoices for customers)

Bluetooth PAN support

Support for connecting to a computer exporting the Personal Area Networking (PAN) profile, to allow networking via PAN.

Nokia SU-1B (Digital Pen) Support

Some plugin to enable connection to and transfer of images from the Nokia SU-1B (Digital Pen)

Samba Support

Port Samba so we can connect to a smb/windows shares.

SCIM Chinese Input Method

Please port SCIM (Chinese Input Method) to IT2006. http://www.scim-im.org/

Support for mounting CIFS and NFS file systems from the file manager

Some form of plugin to mount shares from other computers, be they Windows machines (CIFS) or *nix (NFS) would be nice.

Support for Graffiti or Jot type Handwriting Recognition

GPE Rosetta looks like a strong candidate.

Festival Lite

Porting Festival Lite from the OS2005 to OS2006 environment.

ssh-askpass

ssh-askpass doesn't appear to have been ported from OS2005 to OS2006, and grsync is unusable w/o it. note: When grsync fails with the message that "ssh-askpass" can't be found, that means you need to ssh to the machine you're trying to sync to from xterm on your 770. In the process, the host key will be added to the known_hosts file in ~/.ssh. Then, grsync will work normally. This note should be integrated into the notes for grsync and this call for "ssh-askpass" should be removed, unless somebody needs it for something else.

Alternative Text Input

Some alternative input methods that are hopefully faster than hunt-and-peck. - Dasher: http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/ - Shark: http://www.strout.net/info/ideas/hexinput.html These were requested for the 770 but I understand that it was not possible to get proper access to input methods and the wishlist item was deleted. I hope that the situation as changed with the N800 and am resubmitting this wishlist item. - Speedscript-a-like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfghxOO7vCE http://www.speedscript.biz/?p=functionality

Accessories

Figaro Password Manager

Figaro's Password Manager is a GNOME application that allows you to securely store your passwords with the blowfish algorithm.

http://fpm.sourceforge.net/

KeePass Password Safe

KeePass is a free/open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

http://keepass.info/

Desktop Icons

Home plugin to display icons on the desktop. Something like this.

Lyx

An editor with wysiwym feature for LaTeX. Has three possible frontends : Xforms (the older one, and still looks like !), Qt (is there any port of Qt for mMaemo ?) and Gtk. It could be used with the Mamotex paquage...

http://www.lyx.org

TrueCrypt

TrueCrypt is a free open source on-the-fly encryption (OTFE) program for Microsoft Windows XP/2000/2003 and Linux. It allows one to create a virtual encrypted disk (TrueCrypt volume) within a file and then mount it as a real disk. TrueCrypt can also encrypt an entire hard disk partition or a storage device/medium, such as floppy disk or USB memory stick. WWW http://www.truecrypt.org

SysDisplay

SysDisplay or a similiar app that will show actual battery percent.

JPilot

J-Pilot is a desktop organizer application (PIM) for PalmOS devices. It is meant to be an alternative to the Palm Desktop for those who run the most popular Operating Systems in the World, Linux and Unix. Also, some meaningfull way of syncing desktop files with nokia. WWW htpp://www.jpilot.org

My Favourite Docs Task Navigator plugin

A simple list I can add any document to. 3 features: the document, the application and the title. Adding documents through Control Panel -> Task Navigator -> FavDoc. App to open document with is either system default or my choice.

Ding

A dictionary lookup program for X11/Linux, Unix Contains a German-English dictionary http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~fri/ding/

ZuluPad

A Personal Wiki Notepad http://www.gersic.com/zulupad/

Multimedia

A DVB-TV receiver app

ie. a driver for a usb digital video broadcast card and an app like Kaffein(e). more details: www.linuxtv.org

An Audacity or other sound edting port

An XMMS/TCPMP-style media player

Something that allows OGG, MP3 etc playback from SD cards and HTTP streams with a playlist and big "finger-friendly" buttons.

Tux Paint

Tux Paint 0.9.16 was release in October 2006. 0.9.15 was hildonized for OS2005, and later release (not hildonized) for OS2006. A OS2006 port of 0.9.16 would be nice! http://www.tuxpaint.org/

Status: ported

GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

Would be nice to have it or some other imagem manipulation software on the 770 wouldn't it?

Karaoke Player

There's a pretty big selection of karaoke (.kar and .midi) files available online. With the onboard speaker, it'd be a hoot to be able to use my 770 as a portable karaoke player!

VLC

A port of VideoLan Client (VLC) to the TI ARM processor would be really nice. A Debian i386 and several ARM ports already exist.

Pandora Client

A Pandora client would allow listening customizable "radio stations" on Nokia 770. See http://www.pandora.com. Also see http://www.slimdevices.com for an example of a dedicated device for listening Pandora over WLAN.

Telephony

Phonelink

A port of Phonelink to the 2006 software enviroment. Phonelink has been ported already. check out garage.maemo.org The version listed on garage.maemo.org DOES launch on 2006 IF you install and configured libgnokii.

A2DP system for bluetooth headphones.

UPnP Media Controller

A suitable port/conversion of the Cidero UPnP Controller to the 2006 software environment. Under Maemo 1.1 we had the UPnP Device monitor http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog#head-6f8a4e0c3691c2212b29

Science

Celestia/Planetarium Software

A nice maemo-ized port of Celestia, a free and open source 3D astronomy program. If that isn't possible, any decent planetarium program would be pretty nice.

Stellarium

http://www.stellarium.org/ : Open Source Planetarium (but it works with OpenGL :/)

Networking

SOCKS5 Proxy

The OS 2006 seems to have no support at all for the SOCKS5 proxy. Every networking application should be SOCKS5 enabled, and the Network Connections utility should certainly have it. Depending on HTTP Proxy is far too limiting. Among other things, it requires far too much overhead, and potentially creates security risks, for most people to run a httpd with proxy enabled. SOCKS5 is relatively lightweight and has a variety of good access-control methods. I've ported it from the standard NetBSD SOCKS5 package to run on Slackware linux, but don't have the ability to make a package for the Nokia 770. It's not necessary to include all of the old clients like for Archie or Telnet, just the basic networking proxy layer will suffice. Thanks!

SofSIP GUI

This should really be an easy one: graphical frontend for "SofSIP-Cli" (VoIP command line client, already supporting generic SIP = means WLAN-to-real-phone communication), including SIP-Account Managment and phone number dialing support. See http://wiki.opensource.nokia.com/projects/SofSipCli and http://jonek.hexbox.de/?page_id=43 for details.

TinyFugue

The code is out there, but not compiled, my own attempts have failed, I believe due to some floating point issues or the way xterm osso works. But I would really like a copy to run on my OS 2006 device.

FreeNX client

A FreeNX-client can provide the NX protocol (a compressed and secure forwarded X-session). This would allow an Internet-connected Nokia 770 to serve as a terminal to a much more powerful machine located anywhere in the world (imagine running full KDE desktop on Nokia 770...). There was an attempt to port FreeNX to maemo last year but it stopped due to bug in KDrive (?) XServer, which has been fixed now.

Tor

Tor is a (Open Source) toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. http://tor.eff.org/

Games

Wesnoth 1.2 (Battle for)

A very good turn based strategy game, see http://www.wesnoth.org for more info.

Frozen Bubble 2.1.0

A very good action game with multiplayer, http://www.frozen-bubble.org/ for more info.

ADOM

A nethack like rogue game. See http://www.adom.de/adom/download.php3 for more information.

Gnu-go ported for 2006 edition

Gnu-go has been ported for edition 2005, but download links never worked for me. If some one does this in the hildon way I would preciate.

jpg to sgf converter

Tool that would take in jpg file produced by camera phone and try to recognize go-problem position in the picture and record the result of recognition in a sgf-file. It is ok if it is interactive so that user need to position the goban outline, identify which corner of outline is goban corner and which player is in turn.

xskat

XSkat lets you play the card game Skat as defined by the official Skat Order on any Un*x machine running X11. Features http://www.xskat.de

ONScripter

Would be nice if we could get an ONscripter runtime for the Nokia 770, I've seen this on Linux OS X, WIndows and even the GP2X handheld. I'm no code-expert, but it shouldn't be too hard to port, should it? Link provided: http://nscripter.insani.org/onscripter.html

GUI

Navigation/Trip planning

A tool to do navigation (map display/GPS display) as well as trip planning (route selection, time estimation, points of interest location) - such as TomTom or the Delorme packages, using vector-based maps stored locally rather than image downloads from Google, as MaemoMapper does. In all likelihood this would require a Non-Free application and would require Nokia going to a vendor (unless Nokia could cut a deal with Google....) Update: the announcement of Navicore's support is a step in the right direction, at least for Europeans. Pity it does not help us in the US.

Maybe it is possible to port Roadnav to the Maemo platform

OpenStreetMap

Interface to display OpenStreetMap data.

The 770 is a perfect collecting tool for this project...

OFFICE

Viewer for Openoffice Impress

Combined dictaphone and mind mapper

Tool that would record conversations and free hand drawings pages as series of files. Each page of drawing in a single file. Speach divided in different files based on detected speach caps in sound. Should allow browsing of earlier drawing of same or previous meetings during the recording. Playback of sound files should show drawings based on timestamps changing shown drawing according file creation time. Meant for documentation of a business meeting.

Kernel Images

Kernel Image with the TUN/TAP Drivers
