In order to make Brainstorm more effective there should be a good way to watch/track what is going on without having to come back to check the pages for changes.

I would like to be able to see what new ideas/problems are being posted, what suggestions and comments are being posted for the ideas I am interested in and how ideas are changing state.

Solution #1: One RSS feed

Posted on 2009-07-14 11:04 UTC by Graham Cobb.

Given that the Brainstorm is a low volume site, a single RSS feed reporting all changes to the site (new ideas, new solutions and comments, state changes) would probably work quite well.  The advantage of a single feed is that you don't have to keep adding new feeds in order to track particular ideas.  The disadvantage is that you see updates on ideas on which you are not interested.

Solution #2: New idea RSS feed

Posted on 2009-07-14 11:08 UTC by Graham Cobb.

It would be possible to have an RSS feed just for new ideas and a different way (see below) to track the ideas once they have been created.  This has the advantage that you don't get see updates for ideas which don't interest you, although it means that some specific action is needed to track the ideas which do interest you.

Solution #3: Per-idea RSS feeds

Posted on 2009-07-14 11:09 UTC by Graham Cobb.

Each idea could have its own RSS feed allowing one to watch the idea for solutions, comments and state changes.  This has the advantage that you can track each idea separately but it means adding a separate feed into your chosen RSS reader/aggregator for each idea you want to track, as well as increased load of polling by RSS readers for feeds which have very, very low traffic.

Solution #4: Per-idea email notification

Posted on 2009-07-14 11:14 UTC by Graham Cobb.

Registered users could have a button to click to "watch" a particular idea.  Updates (solutions, comments, state changes) would get sent by email to each user who is watching the idea (using the registered user's email address).  This allows users to only watch some ideas but keeps the load low as there are very few updates.

Solution #5: Notifications by category

Posted on 2009-09-01 07:32 UTC by Quim Gil.

Most developers and product managers are specialized in just 1-2 areas, and actually most contributors tend to end up being more interested in certain topics instead of trying to follow everything. This is why a way to receive notifications (email, feed) by category would be useful.

New ideas and status changes of current ideas would be enough. Then users could subscribe to specific ideas to get every change about that idea (if"Solution #3: Per-idea RSS feeds" is implemented, that is).

Solution #6: RSS Feed by Status

Posted on 2009-09-16 20:41 UTC by Reggie Suplido.

It would be great if RSS feeds can be created by status (or list). With this, you can immediately get notified of new ideas, as well as a change in status for for previously submitted idea. You have the choice to just monitor the 'Implemented Ideas' feed if you want to.

A feed should be created based on the four status (or lists):

  • Idea Sandbox ( e.g. http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/list/sandbox/feed )
  • Under Consideration ( e.g. http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/list/ideas/feed )
  • Ideas in Development ( e.g. http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/list/in_development/feed )
  • Implemented Ideas (e.g. http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/list/implemented/feed )

Even better, the feed can be further broken down by category:

  • Implemented Ideas for the Media category ( e.g. http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/category/Media/implemented/feed )
