Undelete instead of Confirm Delete

Posted on 2009-12-10 14:48 UTC by . Status: Under consideration, Categories: User Experience.

The Hildon 2.2 UI Style Guidelines 12.2-3 state that editing should have an undo option, whereas deleting should require confirmation.

The fallacy of confirmation dialogues is well documented, for example To Confirm is Useless, to Undo Divine. Users simply develop a reflex of tapping confirm on each dialogue, and they become a mere annoyance without offering actual protection from unwanted actions.

A much better solution is for deletion to be undoable, and not require confirmation.

Implement a recycle bin for deleted files. Individual applications will have to manage the undeletion of their own deleted data, perhaps by exporting it to the recycle bin.
