RSS reader should subscribe to multimedia too

Having an RSS reader is nice, but it strikes me that it should also be able to subscribe to podcasts and videocasts as well. The basice idea, then, is that you should be able to subscribe to a "resource" (be it text, video, or audio) in one, centralized application. Contrast this with the one-gui-application-for-every-resource setup we have, where you need to check 2 or 3 applications to keep up to date.

The media playback can be done via the appropriate utility, e.g. by embedded browser for HTML, or gstreamer for video/audio, or even by launching the appropriate application. The core problem is management and overview of media subscriptions.

As a second phase, due ot the limitations inherent in a small device such as the Nokia devices, would be to allow users to proxy their subscriptions through a Nokia/Maemo (as part of an online subscription offering, perhaps) which would transcode the video and audio to a format which will fit better on the device. With such a subscription, it would be possible to decrease the overhead (since many users likely listen/watch the many of the same things), provide Nokia/Maemo-specific offerings, and perhaps even store all but one or two of the items per subscription on the server.

Solution #1: Have central RSS cronjob/daemon, and then viewer apps/embeds

Posted on 2009-10-15 21:41 UTC by Joseph Pingenot.

First, make the rss subscription service a daemon or cronjob. From there, the RSS viewer app talks to the RSS service/database to find out what is available. The Viewer then displays the various Subscriptions, and allows the user to select an item.

Audio can be played in the background via the media player daemon. Video can pop up via the media player, or perhaps be embedded in the Viewer. Finally, text can be displayed directly in the Viewer, as is currently the case.

The home applet could provide a thumbnail snippet of video in addition to the entry's title. Titles for audio and text would display as usual.

Solution #2: Enhance the Media Player to allow Subscriptions

A standard expectation of most mobile devices is that they can subscribe to podcasts or video casts.  If the default Media Player had the ability to subscribe to and keep up-to-date with pod and video casts, I think it would make for a more complete A/V experience.  The starting screen for the Media Player is begging for a 'Podcast' icon next to the "Internet Radio' icon.
