3G drains battery power rapidly and is best to avoid when possible. One way to do this would be to require apps to register if the app should use GSM or 3G connection (just like you can specify only-wifi). By doing so, if none of the applications need 3G, then the phone does not need to even attempt to maintain a 3G connection, saving battery power.
