Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration

Posted on 2009-10-04 20:15 UTC by Tom Joyce. Status: Under consideration, milestone: Harmattan, Categories: Location & Navigation, Office.

Many people have appointments at addresses which are stored in their Contacts directory.  It wopuld be nice to link the address information with the appointment and link that to the event's location in Maps.  Ovi Maps on S60 already has the ability to search for properly formatted addresses from Contacts and one would assume the Maemo version will have the same facility.

Solution #1: Maps automatically starts and finds location of Calendar event

Posted on 2009-10-04 20:17 UTC by Tom Joyce.

When you schedule an appointment, you should get a location field with the option to select either a Maps favourite or an address from Contacts; if there's more than one address for the contact you should get prompted home/business/whatever address. When setting the alarm for the appointment, you would be asked if you want directions (driving or walking) to the location; if yes, Maps fires up automagically at the alarm time and off you go.

Solution #2: Contacts stores location found by Maps for each address for ease of later navigation

Posted on 2009-10-04 20:21 UTC by Tom Joyce.

As above, but with following tweak to Contacts: when adding or editing an address, the user is asked whether they want to search Maps for the address; if they say yes, they are presented with the search results and can select the apporpriate one if more than one is offered.  This location is then associated with the address to avoid having to search Maps for it each time it is used for a Calendar event or the user wants to navigate to that address.

Solution #3: Dynamic alerting of Calendar events based on travel time to event

Posted on 2009-10-04 20:26 UTC by Tom Joyce.

As above, but with a dynamic reminder/alarm time.  A set period before the calendar event begins, Maps starts periodically calculating the time it will take to reach the event's location.  When the the time needed to reach the event plus a user determined factor of safety is less than the time till the event's start the reminder kicks in with the option to start Maps.

Solution #4: To-do list automatically reminds you based on your location

Posted on 2009-10-21 03:46 UTC by John Dickerson.

Since to-do lists are typically integrated in calendar applications; therefore, when you set up your to-do list item you can select a POI (or POI category) or select a location on the map application related to this to-do item.  And when you are near the POI or location your to-do list will trigger an alarm that notifies you of your set to-do item.  The proximity to the POI or map location can be adjusted per to-do item.

Solution #5: Common data model

Posted on 2010-02-16 22:02 UTC by Autoguy Not Specified.

The brainstorm (and solutions) talk about these specific apps but there could be even more and better integration.  Make sure the solution is based on an open data model to allow further improvments in the future and to give 3rd party apps to get the same level of integration.
