On other Nokia devices with Qwerty, long-press gives users access to numbers and symbols. This exists Nokia E71, E75, and the Nokia N97's latest firmware.
I suggest having this feature on the Nokia N900 too.

Holding down a button gives you the number or symbol on the latest Nokia devices with qwerty keyboard (E71 E75, and N97). Implement that feature on the Nokia N900 too.

Allow the user to select the posibility to use the blue arrow to access the blue symbols and the long press for the symbol or not. Sometimes it is even better. There should be a Button to Enable/Disable this feature in the settings.
