Keep DEB for MeeGo

Posted on 2010-02-18 14:55 UTC by Pavel Rojtberg. Status: Under consideration, Categories: System.

As discussed on this page I as part of the community do not see the technical benefit of switching to RPM. As this switch means rebasing to a completely different distribution and by this basically throwing the experience away that was gained during the last 5 years.

Solution #1: Keep DEB also after Harmattan

Posted on 2010-02-18 14:55 UTC by Pavel Rojtberg.

Apperently the concern is shared inside Nokia as Harmattan will still be DEB based. This is a request to keep DEB also for the releases after Harmattan.

Solution #2: Don't care // Just pick one and stick to it

Posted on 2010-02-19 03:33 UTC by Nick Read.

This solution needs to be here as an option for people to choose.

There are no facts that indicate whether the choice of package format will have any beneficial or detrimental impact on end users.  Apart from the initial migration from Maemo (deb) to MeeGo (rpm), there is also no clear winner in packaging formats from a developer or technical point of view.  It has already been indicated that Moblin, and hence MeeGo, does not pull packages from an upstream repository such as Redhat or Debian, so the package format also plays no part here.

I guess this "Just don't care" option will imply moving to RPM as that's what the current MeeGo plans are; however, if they change strategies in the future and move to DEBs, then this solutions still stands.

Solution #3: Use Debian as base system and integrate Maemo and MeeGo components

Posted on 2010-02-22 18:53 UTC by Tom Tanner.

The Maemo on Debian project http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_on_Debian aims to use Debian as base system and integrates the Maemo and MeeGo components.

The first supported device will be the N900, for which the non-free Nokia binaries will be repackaged and installed into a up to date Debian base system, so that all phone functionality is retained while normal Debian packages can be installed.

Ideally, Nokia should use this solution for future devices instead of the less compatible MeeGo distribution.
