Karma for GIVING thanks in Talk

Posted on 2009-09-17 20:23 UTC by Randall Arnold. Status: Under consideration, Categories: maemo.org.

We have Karma already for receiving thanks for posts in Talk, but I believe it should be the other way around as well.  People should be credited for thanking (ie, encouraging others).

Solution #1: Fractional metric

Posted on 2009-09-17 20:27 UTC by Randall Arnold.

I think this should be a fractional metric, and that value can be open to discussion.  I also think the calculation needs to take "noise" into account, for example, "snarky" thanks or thanks for humor (yes, I'm looking at you Gadsby! :p).  So determine a fair formula, then lop off a percentage to eliminate noise.

Suggestions for these values?

Solution #2: Scaled to other activities

Posted on 2009-10-22 01:57 UTC by Timo P.

Calculate karma with formula that is scaled with other activities.

With no talk posts, bugzilla activity and so on one could have no karma even with 10000 thanks.

for example:

Karma = sqrt(thanked) * (0,1 * total karma / total karma )

this way all could have 10% karma from thanks if they only thank enough. If you have 1000 karma, it would mean 100 karma, if you have 10 karma, it means 1 karma.

Of course that 10% could be something else. But I think the principle to limit thanks given would be the most natural way to implement those along to karma measurement.
