Installer for testing applications

Posted on 2011-03-05 01:12 UTC by William Hooper. Status: Waiting, Categories: Other.

The backlog of applications in testing and my own struggles with time to fully report on useful-looking applications I download has made me think about possible solutions. It would be useful to have an installer which noted existing conditions on the device such as space useage, CPU useage, etc. As it stands, there are a few applications for spending extra time checking these parameters, but they must be used before installation of an application, various parameters *accurately* noted, and then checked and noted again at intervals. Such actions are not very practical to expect of the majority of casual testers, due to time, accuracy, and levels of understanding of how and what for to check. It would be more realistic to expect and amenable to most who would like to try an application to install it via a testing installer which tracked several metrics, then just make additional operational performance observations while using the application, and when convenient copy and paste the results of a log. The installer would need to work both as a "one-click" installer like the app manager, and for applications that are installed via the command line. It would when opened provide access to a list of applications that have been installed via it, and provide access to reports made during its installation and operation. After the testing period, the installer app could be brought up and the particular application under testing could be released from monitoring by the installer app, & the log files created for the application tested erased. I believe this would increase participation & accuracy in the testing process.
