Enable hardware arrow keys universally

Scrolling through lists (using the touchscreen) on ALL touch screen devices is, in my opinion, rubbish.

For example, I often find that I am accidentally selecting images in the Photos viewer and dialing numbers when scrolling the call log.

By far the worst offender is the Applications list: going through the list is a complete pain.

Maybe touchscreen devices aren't for me ;)

Maybe so. But as the N900 has a keyboard, I propose the hardware arrow keys are enabled across all applications.

Kinetic scrolling is a really clever way to get quickly through a long list. But if you're touching the screen, it is too easy to accidentally select the wrong item, or miss the thing you were looking for and have to go back up the list again, and go too far again, then have to go down again ...

Solution #1: Enable the hardware arrow keys

Posted on 2010-02-19 13:41 UTC by Jamil Shehadeh.

Enable the hardware arrow keys in Maemo 5 across all applications. This device has a keyboard - use it!

When scrolling through a simple list, the up and down arrow keys would scroll normally, and the right and left keys could be used to 'jump' 10 items or rows at a time or one screen.

I would also like to be able to scroll through photos (when full screen) using the arrow keys.

Obviously, all current touchscreen functions and operations should still be available.
