Camera "burst mode" or series of photos

Posted on 2010-04-07 03:21 UTC by Mathias B. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Media.

In addition to the "Camera timer for taking timed shots" brainstorm, I miss another feature I used to have in my ancient Nokia N80. There seems no possibility to take more than one photo at a time. Each picture needs separate user action.

Doing a series of shots has some advantages when for example taking group photos. Multiple photos higher your chances of having at least one suitable shot where nobody looks dumb like a brick ;)

Also, when observing things, a "series of shots" feature with a larger time between the individual photos saves you some effort. Another point is that the photos are perfectly aligned at the same point of interest, because no one needs to touch the N900. This offers the possibility of creating time-lapse images.

Well, and the final evolution stage of such a feature could be a series of photos with programmable settings for each picture. Combining it with small delays will then be enough to create the raw material for HDR images.

Solution #1: User-adjustable timer and counter

Posted on 2010-04-07 03:21 UTC by Mathias B.

  1. Create another option in the camera menu, consisting of two lists to choose from (presets and user-defined number(s)). One sets the time between two images, and the other one sets the number of pictures to take.
  2. A timer will then be set to trigger creation of as many images in whatever time the user wants.

Nice2Have:

  • For greater delays, the camera app might go into standby mode after each shot, saving energy. Last used settings are restored a short period of time before the next image is taken.
  • Picture naming could indicate that the file belongs to a longer sequence (like for example 20100407_004-08of15.jpg).
  • Closing the shutter while still having an active timer should give a warning message and/or sound.
  • Creating a real burst mode where the images are taken as fast as possible and cached to RAM, rather than fully processing the image, saving it, and taking the next one. Like a hi-res video mode, lasting only a few moments.
