Unified communications

Posted on 2010-05-26 21:54 UTC by Jamie Thompson. Status: Waiting, Categories: User Experience.

Maemo seems to be going for a fully-unified communications concept, and this is great, but the closer it gets to this goal, the more the remaining omissions stand out.

  • Emails should be merged with conversations, as emails are conceptually very similar to SMS messages. The solution(s) should be able to link emails to the contacts with that email address assigned to them.
  • Call logs should be displayed in this view as well, and...
  • ...and all calls should be recordable, both the traditional audio-only variety as well as video calls.
  • ...and finally, as brainstormed elsewhere, SMS message should be syncable to external (IMAP?) folders, and MMS messages should be both included in this unified display and syncable as per SMS.

Ovi Maps should have a map downloader built in

Posted on 2010-06-08 10:32 UTC by Philip Trickett. Status: Waiting, Categories: Location & Navigation.

Given that alot of N900 owners use Linux on their desktop computer as well, and that trying to pre-load maps is difficult without a windows or Mac PC, the download map functionality should be built into the Ovi Maps software.

The Ovi Maps application should have functionality similar to Nokia Map Loader in the settings of the program which allows the following:

Downloading of maps by region

Selection of storage device for downloaded maps

Ability to check for map updates

Ability to erase maps by region

User should be provided with an option of video call when connected to the 3G network. This fearure is available in low end phones then why not in NOKIA n900

Automatically switch to Mobile Sites when on 2G

Posted on 2010-06-16 19:14 UTC by Chris Palfrey. Status: Waiting, Categories: Internet & Networking.

Not sure if this has been discussed (or is already possible) but I would like to have MicroB direct me to mobile versions of websites when on 2g. The desktop versions of websites work great on 3g/wifi but I find 2g to be insufferably slow.

Maybe this could be an enhancement to the user agent switcher plugin?

EDIT:  The proposal is to make this a user option, so if you are happy with the desktop versions of some sites at 2g speed you can turn it off.
