Option to Use Enter To Send SMS In Conversations

Posted on 2010-04-02 13:38 UTC by kyle thomas. Status: Under consideration, Categories: User Experience.

I think pressing enter as well as having the option to press send on the screen would make texting a lot easier. Taking away the need to go from the keyboard to the screen therefore increasing speed.

For the people who use enter for formatting, there could be a setting somewhere that allows customisation of the enter key.

Solution #1: Option To set function

There could be a setting where we could choose to either use enter to send or enter to insert a line break.

Solution #2: ctrl-enter_sends_sms

In my view there's a couple of things "wrong" with the original suggestion. In my view, the behaviour of the Enter key can't be changed in Maemo for these reasons:

1.) Inconsistency in the UI if this is the only place where the functioning of the Enter key is changed. If you change it for SMS, IMO you must change it for IM as well. If you only change one, it will increase the learning curve of the device.

2.) To add an option to switch it on or off would increase unclearness of how things work and still end up increasing the learning curve for the device. It would force people to go through a set-up just to send an SMS.

3.) I need formatting in my SMS' from time to time. Not very often, but since I have a full keyboard, I would really like the option to do so. Besides, being able to add line breaks has been in smartphones since S40 I believe.

However, a "CTRL + Enter" option would IMO please both crowds, the ones who want Enter to send and the ones who want Enter to simply add a line break. One of the greatest arguments for Enter = Send is that it would add to the speed of things, I think this solution will do the same.

Sorry for the odd name, it wouldn't let me give any other title to my post.
