Add Printing option to the N900

Posted on 2010-01-26 21:50 UTC by Fadi Farah. Status: Under consideration, Categories: User Experience, System.

The N900 is advertised as a mobile computer, and as a mobile computer it should be able to do a simple task like printing.  So this brainstorm is for us to actually think about how we could implement it on Maemo 5.

The brainstorm thread can be located here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37739&highlight=Printing

There's also a bug about this: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3099

Solution #1: Get the Maemo team to implement this.

Posted on 2010-01-26 21:51 UTC by Fadi Farah.

Get the Maemo team to implement this option natively on any program that can use this feature; like MicroB, Notes, RSS Reader.. etc.

And then the feature will be there for other developers that would want to add it to their application (especially office applications, from word processing applications to note taking applications, like Xournal).

Feature that includes:

Find Bluetooth/Wifi Printers, Print Preview, Print selected, Print picture, Print certain page(s).. etc.

Solution #2: Port CUPS to Maemo 5

Posted on 2010-01-26 21:54 UTC by Fadi Farah.

Port CUPS to Maemo 5 and integrate it seamlessly, [instead of typing localhost:695 (I think)] it would be there by tapping-and-holding on a page, selecing a text then tap-and hold, going to menu then Print (by tapping on the name of the application on top like MicroB then tap on Print)..

Solution #3: Nokia should work with printer manufactures.

Posted on 2010-02-07 23:17 UTC by Max Mikh.

Nokia should work together with GOOGLE to push on printer manufactures for make them with standart protocol (driver).

Maemo is linux and linux everytime has bad support from printer makers.... Google start to push on printer makers...

Solution #4: Use Google Cloud Print

Posted on 2010-04-17 02:52 UTC by skjf kjdfsh.

Printers that are connected to the service Google Cloud Print allow you to print from anywhere, anything from any device. No drivers, no specific operating system and no physical direct interface between the device and the printer is needed.
