( This is a work-in-progress document. Once in good shape, it will be submitted as an enhancement request to Maemo's Bugzilla. See http://maemo.org/pipermail/maemo-developers/2007-April/009732.html)

Status

At present, Nokia distributes full-replacement releases of the basic Internet Tablet firmware every few months. Nokia also keeps a repository of official and non-official .debs.

Several developers keep their own repositories or offer their .debs as a direct download.

Nokia's Maemo package management application tries to solve this by using "1 click install" files that help the device finding the right repositories without user intervention.

Problems

As seen from and outsider's perspective, Nokia does not make an effort to encourage developers distributing their apps through Nokia's repositories.

Several developers have worked on the same or very similar packages in parallel. As a result, there are several groups offering the same code in different packages.

The "1 click install" fails fairly often with cryptic error messages.
