Introduction

Geoclue for Maemo consists of:

Geoclue
A geoinformation framework. Provides applications current location information (among other things).
Geoclue-status
User interface for controlling geoclue on Internet Tablet OSes

Geoclue for Maemo can be used by any application that would like to use location information. It is fairly new though, so do not expect many applications to support it yet (if you're an application developer thinking about using geoclue, please get in contact).

Installing Geoclue

Geoclue is available for Internet Tablet OS 2007. The status applet is installable with the Application Manager (see the download page) and installing it will install the geoclue service as well.

After installing, use Statusbar configuration (Control Panel --> Navigation --> Status Bar) to enable the applet.

Using Geoclue

Clicking the applet brings up the menu where it is possible to

  • choose the default position provider (applications using geoclue will normally use the default provider chosen here)
  • set location information manually
  • see location information from the default position provider

Some hints on using the different providers in this weblog post.

Bugs

Bugs and feature requests are welcome in the bug tracker.

Known problems:

  • List of providers is now hard coded, so installing new ones won't make them show up...
  • Incompatible with current maemoplazer (svn version of maemoplazer should work)
  • Position API in geoclue 0.8 is still somewhat evolving. Because of that some work-arounds and hacks have been used in the status applet code
