Interface for desktop computing

Posted on 2010-02-05 23:55 UTC by Luke Vinton. Status: Under consideration, Categories: User Experience.

On the maemo forums there seems to be alot interest in using the n900 as a desktop computer.

Currently the following features stop it being usable as one:

1. Lack of ability to connect to an external keyboard / mouse

2. Lack of ability to manage windows / the system from the external interface.

Solution #1: USB/IP with shortcut keys

Posted on 2010-02-05 23:55 UTC by Luke Vinton.

This proposal benefits from the fact that with a little polishing we're almost there:

Keyboard shortcuts: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=43362 USB/IP: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=43420 It however means that a second device is needed as a network USB host

Solution #2: Fix bluetooth HIDs, keymapping and add cursor toggle

Posted on 2010-02-05 23:58 UTC by Luke Vinton.

llow connection of bluetooth HIDs with correct keymapping, mouse behaviour and cursor functionality throughout the system This to me is a best case solution as no other device is required for usb/ip, and with the cursor you get a full desktop experience. This will require the following bugs to be fixed: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=33517 (mouse sticks to outside of screen) http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38372&page=16&highlight=bluetooth+keyboard (bluetooth devices not pairing correctly) In addition a way to toggle the cursor on/off throughout the system will still be needed. This may be a simple graphical change
