If you are in the phone App and choose Select Contact  you will have an alphabetical helper on the right side.

See this screen shot http://www.marktold.com/n900/adressbook_02.jpg

with quick links

If you are in the Contact App you will not have this

without quick links

This should be consistend.

Also it should be possible in the Select Contact list to hold down on a contact to get into edit Mode.

Solution #1: Add A-Z quick search bar in Address Book

Posted on 2010-02-12 16:11 UTC by Markus Berchtold.

I think the A-Z Index on the right side is a great help. Less kinetic scolling - flîcking and stuff.

This should be also implemented when you go to adresses.

Posted on 2010-02-12 16:12 UTC by Markus Berchtold.

If you are searching for a contact in the phone app it should be possible to hold down on the contact to get in eddit mode.

Solution #3: Left handed (or even global) way to control lists?

Posted on 2010-04-08 15:51 UTC by asset burned.

It would be a good idea to implement in a way that this alphabetical tabs can be used for other applications as well (e.g. the program manager) and to allow the user to choose where this tabs should be located.

At least the left or right side of the screen would be useful to let left handed people also benefit from this idea.

Solution #4: dynamic tabs

Posted on 2010-04-08 15:56 UTC by asset burned.

To make this idea even more useful it would be good to make the tabs dynamic. It wouldn't be a problem if all the contacts are equally distributed to all the letters, but if you have a significant greater number of contacts starting for example with the letter M... then it would make sense to have a tab called "M and "NO" and not "MNO".
