App Manager disallows installs that fill partition

Posted on 2009-10-29 07:52 UTC by David Falkayn. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Desktop.

The optification continues apace, but even if every app in the repository is optified, the chance still remains for an install-happy user to fill a partition (root or opt, etc.).After reading about the state that filling root puts the N900 into, preventing normal users from filling the partitions seems like a good idea...

This item is about the desirablity of including some checks and safety mechanisms in the App Manager.

Solution #1: Automatic checking of packages by App Manager

Posted on 2009-10-30 04:04 UTC by David Falkayn.

i wonder if it might not be a good idea anyway to make app manager more intelligent. What about building in a safeguard so that it will examine the package in question and grey it out/disable install if the package would fill root (or maybe any partion for more general usefullness).

It seems that deb tools should be able to ascertain how much space will be taken on each partition.

Solution #2: New required fields in control file to report size

Posted on 2009-10-30 04:11 UTC by David Falkayn.

If automating it is not practical, new fields, e.g.:

X-space-in-root

X-space-in-opt

might do the job, although more disruptively.Make them required for promotion to extras...

It shouldn't be hard to automatically test packages with the autobuilders and fill in fields like this, either. I guess that's somewhat of a third solution hybrid between the first two, but i'll keep it here for now.
