Allow editing and sorting of Track ratings in the Media Player

Posted on 2010-01-19 05:04 UTC by jeremy gillespie. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Media.

The N900's media player allows for very basic selection of music by album, genre or all tracks. There are a lot of other id3 tags which would be nice to be able to select music by in the player.

One example would be to be able to select by track rating so you could select by highest rated tracks or unrated tracks.

Also as I usually only listen to my music collection on my mobile device (now n900) it would be nice to be able to set the tracks rating on the device itself and have this saved within the id3 tag.

This could then later be synced back to the media collection allowing for easy management of new music. (this is not part of the brainstorm but would be a big advantage)

Trying to enter this at the brainstorming site but I cannot seem to get to the site today...

What do other people think of this idea?

Solution #1: Sorting and editing of track ratings

Posted on 2010-01-19 05:10 UTC by jeremy gillespie.

The UI proposed in this posting is perfect:

The stars themselves would be editable, clicking on them would set the rating for the playing track.  These could be added to the current now playing screen with minimal impact to the other items on the screen.

For sorting, additional sorting options would be added as new buttons into the current sort menu giving the following additonal options

1) Highest Rated Tracks

2) Unrated tracks

(along with by Genre, Artist, Album etc...)

These two features would allow users to find any unrated music on the device, listen to it and rate it easily - generally I only listen to my music on my N900 so if I could add or edit ratings when I sync my music back up to my server at home it would copy over the new ratings.
