Improve visual feedback displayed to the user in the email client when performing long operations

Posted on 2010-01-19 00:00 UTC by Mehdi El Gueddari. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Internet & Networking.

This brainstorm is about improving the user experience in Modest, the built-in email client in Maemo 5, when the client performs long-running operations. Irrespective of any performance improvements implemented in the email client, the fact that Modest needs to, for example, download potentially large amount of data over a slow network connection means that some operations will inevitably take a long time (where long time = more than two seconds).

Add PPTP (VPN) support for Connnection Manager

Posted on 2010-01-19 00:31 UTC by Luis Soeiro. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Internet & Networking.

N900 - Maemo 5 (and others)

PPTP is a VPN protocol that is found everywhere, mainly because it is easy to setup in the Windows world. It may not be the best VPN out there, but there are lots of people would would benefit from being able to easily connect to their coporate network.

PPTP (and maybe others, like OpenVPN) should somehow be added to the Connection Manager. There should be possible for the user to associate a connection (GPRS, Wifi, etc) with PPTP so that it can be used in an easy manner.

Desktop Linux has it, Windows mobile has it, iPhone has it and Windows client also has it. It is about time N900 can have it, too.

Make Extras-testing better/faster

Posted on 2010-01-19 07:20 UTC by Sascha Makela. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Programming, maemo.org.

It seems that Extras-testing is not currently working very efficiently. There are many applications in there that have been there for very long time. While proper testing of applications is necessary, it serves nobodies interests if takes too long. This especially problematic for updates of existing applications.

Wireless sync for media (especially music)

Posted on 2010-01-19 17:06 UTC by Chris Phillips. Status: Under consideration

The PC Suite doesnt sync pictures on the N900 and Im not sure if ovi music works with the N900 (I darent touch it since it tried to double up my entire catalogue sometime ago!), nevertheless ovi music nor any solution offers syncing over wifi.

So I propose a program that would sync specified folders (between the N900 and Windows (later on Linux and Mac too). This would allow syncing of anything you want and would be especially handy for music syncing, any new photos taken with the N900, easy video syncing.

Music player track numbers

Posted on 2010-01-19 17:33 UTC by Chris Phillips. Status: Under consideration

Something that has always bugged me with my Nokia phones is the way the Music player numbers tracks in shuffle mode.

For example I have 1908 tracks on my player, when in shuffle on a playlist or general shuffle the display says "869/1908 songs" ie its playing track number 869 (ie the 869th song to be added to my N900). This number is completely inconsequential when playing on shuffle. Surely it should say the number of the track playing in the current shuffle play order - ie go up 1, 2, 3 etc so you can tell how far you are through the shuffle list.

Its small details like this that make the difference in an OS.

I hope this makes sense...
