I'm doing it the 'right way', with Qt4.6 it works fine (i.e. it pulls up the hildon file dialog). It's just Qt4.5 that's messy.
You need to use the hildon file dialog. I don't know whether it's available with Qt already, though.
I am using the standard file dialog, QFileDialog. Apparently it's not completely hildonized in Qt4.5, but there is not much I can do about that. Sorry.
