The status menu button toggles the visibility of the buddy list.
If the buddy list is visible and you press the button, the buddy list disappears. Unfortunately, at that time there is no way to make the status menu disappear too, because the status menu only disappears if a window appears.
Thus, if the buddy list is present when you click the button, the buddy list disappears, but the status menu continues to stay open.

I don't quite follow why the status icon has to be pressed twice somerimes and sometimes once to bring the app forward.
Sometimes the lists fail to refresh properly, and then extras-testing packages do not show up at all. Can you please try again?
