Mappero 3.0+alpha8
Geographical mapping and driving directions.
Specifically designed for the Maemo platform and the Nokia 900 form factor.
It includes support for visualizing GPS input, but is functional and useful
without GPS hardware. It also includes features for downloading and
interacting with maps, GPX data (including driving directions), and other
geo-related information. It focuses in part on in-car navigation and
usability. Home page: http://www.mardy.it/mappero

Comments:
I'm using the app and it is excellent. Maybe the most useful app for maemo. Surely at the top 10 essentials (Nokia should sponsor that).
I've two comments that may be blockers: a) The app is internally named maemo-mapper which I believe conflicts with all maemo-* packages (w.r.t. name). Even the executable is /usr/bin/maemo-mapper. I suggest you rename it everywhere in order to avoid issues.
b) There is no reasoning in uploading something to extras that is versioned as "alpha". I find the app quite stable so you could just remove the "alpha" part. Perhaps just name it 3.0.8.
It is great to see a N900 version of Maemo Mapper. The application is very usable and intuitive (especially if you have used this on other tablets). It does seem resource heavy, and is prone to lag/freezing, but no more so than the Diablo version.
One possible UI suggestion could be to add an on screen button to toggle layers on/off.
Finally, I noticed that the help and about selections in the menu do not seem to work.
Great job on this implementation otherwise. In many ways it is still superior to the default map program!
Hi Alberto, thanks for useful info Ctrl+Bacspace woks fine. I like this application. I hope I can find the cause of a crash, and also send you useful information.
Hi František, sorry to hear that. Next time an application freezes while in fullscreen, you should be able to get to the task switcher by pressing Ctrl+Backspace.
Nice application. Unfortunately, can froze. It was in full screen mode and I can't switch to other application. I waited approximately 10 minutes then i must switch it off and on my N900. Most probably the reason was data connection lose at time the map is downloading.
Kaj-Michael, I don't see a app named "Mapper" in extras or extras-testing. Only this Maemo-Mapper uses that name.
Kaj-Michael, I was asked to remove it when maemo-mapper went to testing first. :-(
Sorry, but the "Mapper" name is alread in use. Why did you remove the maemo- prefix?
Thanks Alberto, Just tried that and it works perfectly - I think it confused me that the buttons only appear when you click on the screen. Excellent App.
Hi Jeremy! Just try to keep your finger pressed on the zoom on-screen buttons and you'll see: it works exactly how you describe, there's constant zoom in/out. :-)
Very promising application - needs a bit of hildonization and made a bit more finger friendly. When zooming is it possible to make it so that the zoom in/out buttons do not dissapear with each zoom - it would be nice to just hold down this button for example to do constant zoom in. No need for the google maps application with this installed - great Job!!!
