Facebook Chat has launched support for Jabber/XMPP.

Reference Facebook Blog post : http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=297991732130

To get Facebook Chat running on your n900 without ANY extra programs, using only the built in features of a stock n900, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the Settings Menu
  2. Go to VoIP and IM accounts
  3. Press New
  4. Select Jabber
  5. Press Register New Account (necessary even if u already have a facebook profile, note that if you don't have a facebook profile i don't know if you can do this)
  6. In the 'User Name' field, type in '@chat.facebook.com' substituting your facebook vanity profile name for and obviously omitting the single quotes.
  7. In the 'Password' field enter your current facebook password, then enter it again in the Verify field
  8. Press Advanced Settings
  9. In the 'Connect to server' field, type 'chat.facebook.com'
  10. Ensure that Port is set to '5222'
  11. STUN settings are unneeded, leave default
  12. After finishing registration, login with username: @chat.facebook.com' and your facebook password.

Please note that this will pollute your Address Book with all your facebook contacts so be prepared to clean up.

Due to the Facebook plugin issues that can cause alot of problems for the users (as most have Facebook accounts) I'm giving this a thumb down.

I agree with the facebook issues. Great feature but still some problems to work out. I dont see duplicate contacts but I am having the duplicate chat issues and in some cases what I type is echoed back to me from who I am talking to.

I am ok with the chat duplication, but the most annoying thing is the contacts duplication.

It generated a new contact whenever someone on Facebook goes online. After merging the contact to an existing contact. By going offline or disable account, then going online again, the merged contacts continue to show as a new contact and has to be merge again.

Jonny, can you modify facebook chat package to address the these issues:

  1. killall mission-control in postinst so users can sign in their FB account right after installation.

  2. disable show history by default to eliminate chat dupliaction issue.

It's still quite buggy especially the new Facebook chat plugin.

With Facebook chat, 1) duplication continue to occur when going online/offline or enable/disable the account. 2) Chatting on a normal browser on a computer generate false messages on the N900. Ie I said 'Hi' to a person from my computer, the N900 shows 'Hi' from the person I'm talking to at the same time.
