Btw just edit /usr/share/xournal/xo-hildon.xml and add

somewhere in the section. And you've got your ruler back.

Hi,

thanks for the comments, much much appreciated. Don't worry (yet) about the "missing" actions. I am figuring out (still) the best way to fit ALL (or as much as possible) of those in the, cramped, Maemo 5 interface. Some are missing, but only because they are missing in the new XML UI file.

When I'll figure out the best way to organize them, they'll be all back.

I have tried the latest package of Xournal on my N900.

Before continuing I should say that I am a constant user of Xournal. I take notes everywhere. I annotate PDFs. Xournal was for me the last missing piece to make my N900 my primary device. I used to have both N810 and N900 for some weeks in my pockets, since I carried all the notes in N810.

Some comments for the fremantle port:

I like the smoothness of writing. It feels much faster than on the N810.

  1. For the shortcuts bar at the bottom I would still like to have:
    • ruler : very important for highlighting of pdf docs!!
    • zoom in and out. I used the zoom a lot on N810 in order to write more on a single page. Related to this: I noticed on N810 that the more pages you have the slower the application becomes, even if I see only part of a page at a time. So zooming enabled me to write more without having to add pages unnecessarily.
  • Add page

  • Also I miss the undo/redo from the bar: undo is a quick way to erase.

  1. For the menu:
    • can it become more Fremantle like? You could have a separate dialog for settings, so that the menu becomes lighter
  • since layers are allowed then hiding/showing the layers would be appreciated
  1. For the settings - there is some overhauling needed imho
    • I really miss the possibility to select deletion of strokes for the eraser. Erasing by moving the stylus around is really slow and only useful when you need to make a precision erase. Erasing by stroke is much much faster
  • Paper style and colour: I liked that in the old version of Xournal, please bring it back :-)

    • in Options: why do we need to have the option for print paper ruling? It has not been useful to me. If I need to set this, before printing, I move the note to my desktop and there I can do more.

    • also in options: why auto save and save preferences together?

I do not find the help item in the menu all that useful. I tried it maybe once in a year. Maybe the 'about' item with info to get some better help online would be better.

Maybe it would also be possible to reenable the background change of a note page: with pictures taken on N900 this would allow easy annotation of pictures :-)

Finally some more ideas:

  1. are you planning to support sound recording at some point? Check the livescribe.com, it would be neat if xournal could use a plugin which would enable users to record voice as well as take notes.

  2. encryption of note files (does not open unless you know the password)

I am pretty sure that I forget stuff in this comment, but I will provide more feedback as I go.
