Asturlinux X Anniversary

It was 1999 when AsturLiNUX, was created. I joined in 2000, when my first machine with Linux inside was an iPAQ 3130 using Familiar distro and GPE (Gtk based framework). I’ve found friends here, and I think I am getting older when I remember these moments. But there is a funny maemo related timeline I would like sharing:

In 2002, I met Ivan, AKA Asjas, in a little workshop about Linux in handhelds. We were discussing about if someday a company could create a Linux based handheld for consumer market.

Months later, we travelled to give a talk in a national OpenSource congress about Linux in handheld devices (photo). There is the rumour that the boy who created maemo name was in the conference room.

In 2006, Ivan and me gave a talk about Maemo. Some months before, I had shown my 770 to Ivan (a boy who didn’t have even a phone) and we talked about Python possibilities on it. So, there we were talking about Maemo platform.

In 2009, during AsturLiNUX anniversary celebration, I have had the pleasure to introduce Ivan’s talk about Maemo platform (photo), since he was one of the invited celebrities

And during all this time friendship still remains. So yes, at the end, it is all about people and friends. Thank you friends!

Symbian on a capacitive touch screen! What about Maemo?

Today I was reading about Texas Instruments Zoom(TM) OMAP34x-II MDP, the first hardware reference design for Symbian^3 (future opensource version of SymbianOS). And I’ve found that it seems some parts in common with new maemo hardware platform:

OMAP3 based

4.1″ LCD WVGA LCD

keypad

accelerometers

etc…

But one of the funniest thing is that it has a capacitive touchscreen! Many people have told me that iphone/ipod touch devices are better because their capacitive screens, but finally we will see a symbian phone using same hardware technology.

Now the question are:

Will Maemo be supported too by Zoom2? (at least Linux is supported)

Or even better, how similar are new Maemo5 based devices to Zoom2? I hope not too much, because this development platform starts from $1150!! (maybe because the debugging parts and the 8MP camera!)

Nokia using ARM new multicore processor?

It seems that (rumor mode: ON) Nokia is working on a Linux based device that is using latest ARM multicore processor called Sparrow(rumor mode: OFF)

I’ve seen this in a post from Unwired about Secrets at Mobile World Congress 2009. There is even a mockup for the device and it seems very promising. If someone understand Russian, extra info can be found on Eldar Murtazin’s blog

Ok, ok, most of us are still waiting for next Maemo based devices that are surely being already tested (I envy testers), but it is always good knowing that Nokia is working on the future (even if it is only for internal research), and since there weren’t many news about Maemo in MWC09, rumors keep us alive

As many people should know, today Nokia has released Ovi Store and Ovi Publish, its own marketplace for developers to monetize their apps. There is nothing related with Maemo on the site yet, but it has been said that Maemo platform will be suported (not in May but on the shorter term roadmap). So, think about it, because this will add another chanel for third-parties to increase the number of apps for our beloved platform, and make it competitive. So, at least, there were Maemo related news from Mobile World Congress.

Talking about Maemo and N810

I’ve been invited to talk about mobile technologies for an ICT Promotion Initiative called Asturias, territorio TIC (Spanish website), that mixes technology and tourism (showing wonderful places of our region). In my case, we went to Cabo Peñas, and all the posts and videos are under “Web en tu móvil con Manrique” category. But I would like to remark the videos about Maemo and Elisator, because it isn’t very normal seeing an N810 in this kind of initiatives in Spain:

Explaining what a Maemo device is: Dispositivo móvil de acceso a internet (youtube video)

Handwriting calculator for Nokia touchscreen devices

It’s been long time since my last publication about using Giac/XCAS in embedded devices (in 2002 HPCC archive) and my presentation about the idea of a linux handheld calculator at HPCC Conference (see image of 16MB monochrome ipaq running it). But today, Nokia Beta Labs has turn one of my dreams true. They have released a handwriting calculator for Nokia’s touchscreen devices (Maemo devices and Nokia 5800 Xpress Music Edition).

I’ve tested it, and it looks nice, but I miss a lot of mathematical features. I hope I could join the project somehow, because I have several ideas about how this can be improved

Nokia N97: The N810 (and successors) killer?

Nokia is well known as creating killers for their phones. For instance, they released the wonderful N96 at the very same time as the N85.

Now they release the best phone ever: the Nokia N97. But do not tell me you maemo lovers that the concept of that phone does not remind you of our beloved N770, N800 and N810.

Of course, we maemo (and, in general, Linux) freaks are waiting for the promising evolution of the N810 and the next step of our favourite mobile OS (maemo Fremantle) and, if we find the money, we will buy it. But it is not a phone, while the N97 is… and besides, it also has a touch screen (with more resolution), it also has HSDPA access (as the next Nokia MID will have), it also has a QWERTY keyboard… and it will also allow to run an open-source OS.

What do you OMAG people and rest of the maemo community think about that? Feedback wanted

Nokia World Event is over, what about Maemo?

Nokia World Event has finished, and the N97 (pdf/160 KB) was announced, but, what about Maemo? Any news about new Maemo device/s? It seems not, but…

It seems that Ovi is the great services strategy for Nokia for next year, so I suppose that any new NSeries device will integrate these services (specially after seeing Niklas Savander keynote)

The N97 user interface might be showing some ideas about what can we expect from new Maemo user interface

New Maemo devices will be OMAP3 based, but it seems that N97 comes with other processor (Unconfirmed)

And some regrets after all. I’ve seen/hear a lot of time the word open in the presentations but:

There isn’t yet a Nokia PC Suite for open operating systems

The Nokia Ovi Maps site ask me to use a right web browser, when it should ask me to use other operating system, to download an .exe file

And this event has left a great keynote, the one from Ray Hammond, and a great quote from Anssi Vanjoki:

I want to surf the entire internet, not just some pieces of the internet

Me too, but my desktop computer is not the same that my mobile computer, so I can’t expect the same user experience in both machines, but I can expect an optimized user experience for the context I am using my computer (whatever my computer or context are). But, that’s another story…

Flash content in mobile devices or how to soothe the pain in maemo

Everybody is very happy with the support of the full web in mobile devices, but any regular user knows/suffers the fact of trying to enjoy rich web sites from a mobile device. Even with a powerful mobile device like the Nokia N810, making use of WiFi connectivity powered by a good ADSL/Cable network connection behind, certain web sites are a hell to enjoy.

The user, although having a full-web browser, ends up using a simpler mobile version for the browser not to drain battery power (for instance, due to the Javascript engine making intensive use of the CPU in Facebook or in Google Reader). The Google Reader site is a good example of how the mobile version is good enough for us to do what we want with almost no cost in computational terms.

I have always loved visiting Spanish sports online-newspapers like As or Marca from the N810, but always making an exercise of injecting patience to my state of mind before accessing: they are filled with Flash content (mainly with advertising purposes) that makes loading the main page as painful as a kick on your butt.

Some days ago, I specifically searched for some sort of Flash blocker, taking into account that such an add-on exists in Firefox and that maemo’s microb is based on the Firefox engine. I discovered the Browser Extras repository and then found a Flashblocker port for MicroB.

Using Flashblocker has changed a 100% CPU into an idle CPU when browsing those sites I mentioned, and I can spend the whole weekend fluently browsing for sports results and with no care about the gadget’s battery.

Thanks to Andre Pedralho for such a great job. I encourage you to read the Maemo Browser Extras web page and install the Browser Extras repository for maemo which will give you access to other stuff like the User Agent Switcher or AdBlock.

Maemo Summit is over, but the community has just get stronger. The lighting talks idea was great and we could see some interesting projects. I’ll post during next days about things we have seen and those that have been announced, but some remarkable points for me after these days:

there are real passionate hackers working in Maemo and not just talking about the Nokia guys but also about the people from third parties

new device is comming, but, one of the real improvements for Maemo platform will be the set of tools (SDK, docs, help mechanisms,…) that will be released

The community and the open philosophy behind it could make Maemo the best open environment for mobile world, but it could also be the major challenge for Nokia to achieve the success they are expecting with these devices

Many demos about how to run a complete Debian based distribution in actual hardware, but hey guys, do you expect OpenOffice.org to be usable in your device? But it could be useful…

One last thing for developers, you will be able to do nice things with 3D animations, but don’t use it for the gallery but for user experience improvement

Five minutes, that’s all the time I have for my presentation and talk about Elisator. And I sure that during that five minutes, I’ll be thinking about my early presentations about Linux in embedded devices:

like the one on 16th November 2002 in Madrid. I can still remember Miguel’s face when I showed him an iPAQ 3130 with GPE inside

or like the one during “2006 Free Software in Asturias Congress” presenting Maemo platform, with the help of a friend, a friend that already in 2002 was impressed about what Linux could do in a small iPAQ. I still remember the first time I talked to him about Maemo platform and convinced him to start developing for it,… Do yo know where do this friend works now?

So, yes, this Maemo Summit could be an interesting experience…
