Nokia India has very kindly invited me to an exclusive preview of the Nokia N8, a device I have been wanting to get my hands on for a very long time. To say that I am excited is an understatement, for the the simple reason that the N8 brings functionality that I have wanted to ages. USB on-the-go and support for a bluetooth mouse in addition to all the other awesome functionality such as HD video capture, 12 MP stills, capacitive multitouch OLED display and I could go on.

So I will be going to New Delhi, come Friday to put the N8 through its paces and go over it with a fine tooth comb. If you have anything questions, or things I must check out, do let me know and I will be sure to get you answers.

Fortunately, by this time the N8 firmware should have also reached a certain level of maturity and we will get a good idea of what thinks will be like when it launches in late September.

I cannot wait.

For over three years now I have been running a website called The Symbian Blog, a website that you have helped grow from strength to strength. What started as a hobby under the vaibhavsharma.wordpress.com domain, moved to thesymbianblog.com when things got a little serious. Then I decided I needed my own hosting and off it went from the wordpress.com servers and things merely went on.

Two years later Nokia introduced the N900 and I decided I needed to cover it, I simply liked it too much to ignore it. But since this was the ‘Symbian’ blog, how could I? Our tagline has always been ‘All things Symbian and then some more’ but I felt it wasn’t enough. Therefore, MaemoCentral.com happened and boy was I surprised by the warm welcome it received. But Nokia meanwhile had other plans, plans of wrapping up Maemo and getting started with MeeGo. Since the N900 was going to be the last Maemo device, I had to adapt and move MaemoCentral.com to TheMeeGoBlog.com, I tried to do this seamlessly and thankfully it worked.

Back to the present, I had two websites to manage and update and I was simply not finding enough time, both The Symbian Blog and The MeeGo Blog were doing great and both demanded my attention. Early last month I felt I needed to merge them together as it would not only make my life much easier, but you the dear reader would get a one stop shop for all your mobile needs. I asked you on Twitter, and all of you wanted to see this happen, bar none.

Yet, I was finding it hard to giveup a brand that I have worked on for so many years, a brand that has virtually given me a new identity. It was a hard choice but I felt it was for the greater good. Finally today on the fourth of August, I gave in.

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to The Handheld Blog, it REALLY is a pleasure seeing you here.

I did not shut down The Symbian Blog or The MeeGo Blog, they’ve simply evolved. I still firmly believe in Symbian and from what little we’ve seen of MeeGo, it sure has the potential to do wonders for Nokia. Speaking of Nokia, I do believe the company’s on a comeback trail and come Nokia World more of you would join me in that belief. I can’t wait for that to happen.

But hey, now that we have a generic name, I’m sure you would like to read about Android as well, I’ve just started to experience it myself and you can rest assured that I will be taking you along for the ride.

On the technical aspects of the move, I hope that everything will continue to work flawlessly. You should be automatically redirected from both websites to the relevant posts you were looking for, all the content is already here along with your precious comments. I will be renaming our @TheSymbianBlog twitter account to @TheHandheldBlog while @TheMeeGoBlog will become @v4ibhav, where you can get in touch with me.

If you already haven’t, you can go ahead and subscribe to ‘The Handheld Blog’ right here and also follow us on twitter @TheHandheldBlog. If you would like to follow me, @v4ibhav is the handle.

Thank you for your time, I look forward to hear your thoughts on the move or any feedback that you might have. Do you like the new domain name?

Yours Truly,
Vaibhav Sharma

PS: Everything is just as it was, we just have a new name that’s all!

Possible Nokia MeeGo UI Captured On Video – Is Super Slick

A video showing off an iteration of the MeeGo OS has popped up on the internet and from all indications, it looks like Nokia’s MeeGo UI. What lends credence to this fact is the Ovi Store demo that forms a part of the video.

The UI looks incredibly slick and I can’t wait till Nokia World when Nokia will reveal its first MeeGo device and if this UI is anything to go by, we have a fight on our hands!

The ability to overclock the N900 has existed for a long time now and we have covered it before. But overclocking the N900 has never been so easy, two simple installs from the Application Manager and a short command via the terminal is all it takes. If you have been wanting to try it out but were holding out because it seemed too complicated, this guide is for you.

However, please note that overclocking the N900 will void your warranty, although it is possible to the flash to the stock kernel/state if you no longer want to overclock your device. Apart from that you also risk damaging your device and losing data. Please continue at your own peril.

That said, lets get started.

The first thing you need to do is install ‘rootsh’ from the Application Manager, make sure you have the relevant repositories enabled.

Next install the ‘Enhanced linux kernel for power users‘ from the ‘System’ section in the Application Manager. It supports overclocking upto 1.15 Ghz.

Restart the device.

Now install ‘Enhanced kernel for power users (settings)‘.

Open the X-Terminal and enter the following command.

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load ideal

This will load the ideal profile which overclocks your phone to 850 MHz. At this point if you experience reboots or the phone seems to act funny, try using the ‘lv’ settings that uses slightly higher voltages than the ‘ideal’ profile. If it is still unstable try ‘ulv’. The various presets are ‘default’ – ‘lv’ – ‘ulv’ – ‘xlv’ – ‘ideal’ – ‘starving’.

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv
kernel-config limits 250 850

If the N900 seems stable, you can have these settings as a preset of your own.

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv
kernel-config limits 250 850
kernel-config save myideal

With the current configuration, the N900 will resort to the default 600 MHz state everytime it is rebooted. This is done to avoid letting the N900 get caught in a reboot loop. If you are happy with the N900′s performance and stability, you can then also set the N900 to overclock by default on startup. Use the following command:

sudo gainroot
kernel-config default ideal (whichever preset you want to set as default e.g. myideal)
kernel-config show (this will show you your current settings)

If you want to revert to the original settings, here is the procedure to follow. Jakiman over at talk.maemo.org has a very comprehensive guide as well, if you are looking for more information I suggest you give it a read.

One last thing, if you want to configure the N900′s overclocking setting with a visual UI and not the terminal, install QCPUFreq from the Application Manager. Then once you have installed the packages mentioned above all you will need to do is move the slider to overclock to the desired level. My suggestion is don’t go past the 850 MHz mark.

Before you do this, please keep in mind one thing ‘because it can be doesn’t mean, you have to do it!’

In most areas the N900 supports the ability to start typing to automatically search for the relevant content. For example on the homescreen you can starting typing the name of a contact to see it appear without having to goto the contacts application, the same in Conversations and the Application Manager.

The one place that the N900 does not do this is the menu, and if you have a lot of applications installed searching for the one that you are looking for quickly becomes a pain. Enter App Search Widget by Nicolai Hess that lets you search for the relevant app right from the desktop.

The widget is the size of a normal app icon and can be placed anywhere on the homescreen, you can even place it on each homescreen for fast access.

A simple tap brings up a list of the apps installed. You can start typing to filter apps or simply scroll and select the one you are looking for.

Once you have your app, a single tap on it launches it. Simple.

This is definitely one of the most useful apps in the Maemo Repositories and I suggest you go ahead and download now.

As you may be aware, we have been holding the ‘Maemo Master’s Invitational’ here on The MeeGo Blog for the past four weeks, and its time to move into the final week of the contest. Under this we have partnered with Nokia India to bring you the ability to purchase a ‘Maemo Masters Edition’ of the N900 that comes with special goodies including a Maemo Masters T-Shirt and a cool BH-214 stereo bluetooth headset.

So basically, you pay the same price that you normally would have, but also get to take home some very cool swag, I specially like the BH-214 which allows you to plug-in any headset that you like and turn it into a bluetooth headphone. Since this is the last week and I am feeling generous, I’ll make entering the ‘Maemo Masters Invitational ‘ super easy. There are three ways to enter:

Simply comment on this post with a valid email address; or

Follow @TheMeeGoBlog on Twitter and send us an @ reply letting us know that you are interested; or

You can also enter directly by using this contact form to send us an email. Please use ‘Maemo Masters Invitational’ as the subject.

For week 3 and 4′s winners, I’ll be in touch via email. Good luck.

Note: Only valid if you are in India.

Thanks to @_Nexus on Twitter, I’ve just come across these short ad films that Intel’s produced to showcase MeeGo. If MeeGo has to succeed in a big way, advertising and brand recognition will have to play a major role and its good to see Intel start now.

The ad film is more developer focused, but I though you might to watch it anyway.

Marco Barisione’s just released an app called ‘Ringtoned’ for the N900 that brings the ability to set custom ringtones for each contact in the N900′s phonebook. The best part about this app is that it integrates well with the N900 as there’s no standalone setup, you can asign a default ringtone from the Profiles menu as usual and for custom ringtones, just go to the Contacts application, select the contact and press the new ‘Set custom ringtone’ button in the menu.

Search for ‘custom ringtones’ in the application manager after enabling extras-devel and refreshing the repository.

To set a custom ringtone, open contacts, select the contact you want and goto options by hitting the name of the contact in the title bar. Select ‘Set custom ringtone’.

The UI to set a ringtone is just like the one under Settings>Profile. When you are finished, press done and you are all setup.

The app is available from the Extras-Devel repository, or you can also download it from Marco’s personal repository here. Since this is the first release there might be bugs and if here is heavy load on the system, the ringtone might start after a slight delay. Future versions of this application should have the ability to set a custom ringtone for anonymous phone calls and for calls from an unknown number as well.

The inability to set custom ringtones for individual contacts has been something a lot of people have missed on the N900, but once again through Marco Barisione‘s fine work, the community has come through.

Front View Turns The N900 Into A Very Good Document Scanner

We all take images of documents as a quick way of making notes, but the shots time time to compose so that you get the alignment right and so on. But if you have a N900, you no longer need to worry about that because benlau has published a brilliant app called Front View (FrontView900) that makes this process fun.

You can take the image anyway you want without having to align the document and the app will automatically detect which part of the image is the document and discard the rest of the image. Plus, it will also let you crop and rotate the shot you’ve just taken so that you have the perfect scan.

Not only that, it can detect multiple documents within one image and you can even manually select the part of the image you want. benlau has also put together a video showing off this really impressive application.

The application is currently in extras-testing, but at the rate it is going, it should soon be making it to Maemo Extras, I just voted for it myself.

Hat tip to @alextootchie for the find.

The N8 has it and now, so does the N900 – bluetooth mouse is a go thanks to the efforts of azerty1 who’s even put together a video to show it off. The N900 doesn’t have the bluetooth HID profile that allows for using a bluetooth mouse enable by default, so doing that and the other tasks needed to get the setup up and running is a bit of work, but if TV + Keyboard + Mouse is your thing, its time to hack away.

You can find detailed instructions of the first post in this thread. Oh yes, easy Debian is suddenly now much easier to use.

Day 1 for the MeeGo UI is here and with that comes a ‘developer preview’ of how the OS is shaping up. There are a bunch of screenshots available on the official MeeGo website but if you are feeling adventurous, there is a N900 version you can play with. The current release comes with a dialer, sms, photo viewer, browser, and personal connection management applications. These apps are a works in progress, and the MeeGo UI is no where near ready for mainstream adoption yet.

The idea behind MeeGo 1.0 for handsets is to give everyone an idea of how the MeeGo 1.1 release (due in October) is shaping up. The release is not bug free and here is a list of some workarounds to those issues. The MeeGo team has also published a video showing off the UI, take a look for yourself and let us know what you think? A nice mashup of the best from the popular platforms with some bonus features?

I will reserve judgment till I play with it on my N900, it is also worthy to note that Nokia’s next Nseries will probably not look very similar to the UI we’re seeing above. Although they do have a tendency to keep most most of its as they are usually the ones who’ve worked the most on it. (Symbian for example, the other manufactures have their UI layers)

So what do you think of the MeeGo 1.1 developer release?

We brought you news of a MeeGo tablet a little while back, but a detailed demo of its early MeeGo UI has just popped up in HD. The video clearly shows the paneled homescreen which holds your photos, videos, web feeds and other content in vertical columns that can be scrolled sideways. It automatically updates itself and also packs a deep level of social integration removing the need of dedicated apps.

It also has a simpler app launching screen which works just as well. MeeGo supports full blown multitasking, HD video playback, and five finger multitouch. The current demo comes with Intel’s App Up client fro downloading more apps, while the Nokia variant will probably come with the Ovi Store.

Apart from that the UI looks intuitive, fast and has all the eye candy that you could wish for. I have wanted Nokia to make a large screen internet tablet for a while now and it looks as if Nokia World will hold the key. The MeeGo tablet will give me an amazing web browser with flash and multiple video codecs, so I can virtually throw anything at it and it will play it. This is something the iPad cannot do and that’s why its not for me.

What do you think?

Last week I told you that we had teamed up with Nokia India to host the ‘Maemo Masters Invitational‘ in which I would be able to invite 5 of you each week for 5 weeks to purchase a ‘Maemo Masters Edition’ of the N900 that comes with special goodies (including a Maemo Masters T-Shirt and a cool BH-214 stereo bluetooth headset) for the readers of The MeeGo Blog.

Today’s its time to reveal the names of first 5 Maemo Masters:

Anurag Jindal

Nithish Rajan

Nithin

Vinu Jose

Ajit

Many congratulations! I will be in touch via email with all the details.

For those of you who missed out, I have some great news. If you entered the first week’s contest, I will also consider the same entry for the contests coming in the following weeks AND you can also take part in the second week’s contest again to double your chances of winning! Sweet?

For those of you who’ve just seen this contest, don’t worry we still have 4 weeks and 20 Maemo Masters to be crowned. So how do you enter this week’s contest? Simple, answer the following questions in the comments section below:

Can the N900 act as a remote control? (Hint)

In what resolution does the N900 capture video?

Good luck!

PS: Please note that this contest is geographically limited to those of you in India only.If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

The N900 comes with a pretty basic photo editor that allows you to crop and resize, but if you want to do a bit of quick colour correction or editing, you were pretty much out of luck. Enter Ansel-A by lostinmirkwood.

It is a ‘digital darkroom’ for the N900 that can perform:

Filtered-Black-&-White-Conversion

RGB-Color-Correction

Brightness, Saturation, Contrast and Sharpening

Pixel-level-Cropping (Portrait is still a little fishy)

Tonal Shadows/Highlights

Kinetic Photo Browser

360-Degree-Precision-Rotation

EXIF-Browser-with-maps

Unlimited-Visual-Undo

Is Multi-Platform (Qt4.6, PyQt)

By looking at the above list if you are not quite sure as to what the software does, the following video should help.

The app takes a little while to load because it pulls recent images from the camera roll, you can also load more images or manually select the one you want. The controls are intuitive and you always have the safety of undo when you try and experiment. Some actions like rotation, are pretty impressive and not not many apps support editing so extensively.

Ansel-A is available for installation from extras-testing and is virtually a must have if you consider yourself a photographer of any kind. The best part is that the developer is taking feedback, bugs and feature requests, so if you like the app get involved at this TMO thread or leave a comment on his blog.If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

I am not someone who likes changing themes often. I like themes that look elegant, polished and definitely not brash. Over the last seven or so months of owning the N900, I have tried almost every theme that is available and have come away with the following as my picks.

Most of these themes comes from the Maemo repositories so make sure you have them enabled. Then just type the name to search in the Application Manager and install. So without further adieu, here are my must have themes for the N900, in no particular order.

Black Plastic – The lists in this theme are shaded differently, nice change.

an-DROID – One of my favorites. Love the colours on this one.

Bossa Teal - For times when you want custom icons. Seems to slow down the phone though and takes 6MB in rootfs.

Carbon – Brilliant. Dark. Polished. Makes the N900 look good.

D-Theme Red – I like red themes. They go well with the black on the N900. This is part of the D-Theme series, check them out for different colours.

iStyle Black – Part of the iStyle series. Best of the lot.

Matrix – Its here because it goes amazingly well with the Matrix live wallpaper. Plus I like the vibrant colours too.

Red Alert – Another red theme, but sadly not part of the repositories so you will have to manually download and install if you liked it. Get the .deb here, locate it in the file manager and tap to install.

R-Style Green – Part of the beautiful R-Style series that features similar design in new colours. Green is easily my favourite.

So there you have it, those were my picks. Think there is a theme that deserves to be in this list that I have missed out? Please let me know. What themes do you like?If you enjoyed this, you might also like:

Right after the N900 India launch event, I sat down with a group of bloggers that Nokia had invited to talk all things N900. The best part was that it was a diverse mix, which included bloggers from different avenues.

Some of us were very familiar with the in’s and out’s of the N900, while we also had people who were still new to the device. While we were talking, I was filming so here’s a 10 minute video capturing everyone’s thoughts with a few agreements and disagreements thrown in.

The N900 is finally in India, is seven months late, but is still a compelling device. I am sure a lot of you in are in the market for an N900 and this post should bring a cheer to you.

We have teamed up with Nokia India to host the ‘Maemo Masters Invitational‘ in which I will be able to invite 25 of you to purchase a ‘Maemo Masters Edition’ of the N900. The best part is that it will cost the same as the N900 you can buy at your local store, but will come with a bunch of really nice goodies.

The Nokia N900 of course.

A pair of BH-214 Bluetooth Headphones.

A specially crafted ‘Maemo Master’ T-shirt.

The official Nokia title of a ‘Maemo Master’.

Controlling your TV from your mobile phone has been possible for a long time now, I have personally used the Nokia 6600 for this functionality in the past. Then IR ports started to disappear from most devices and recently they have made a comeback of sorts. The N900 has one, so the obvious use is turning it into a remote.

You have already seen Raemote, which turns the N900 into an Apple remote, today is the turn of the Irreco widget. This compact widget features basic features that include volume and channel control, mute the TV and power it on or off.

It works independently of the Irreco app and can be downloaded from extras-devel in the Application Manager. The range is obviously nowhere near that of a dedicated remote, but is good enough for the odd use. After installation reboot the N900 to see the widget on the homescreen.

Next, longpress the widget to enter its settings and go on to download your specific remote.

Once downloaded you should see the following. If you don’t find the specific remote you are looking for, try selecting something close to it.

Simply exit the settings and start using the widget.

Barriosquare, a dedicated foursquare app for the N900 has been available for quite a while now. But in my usage I have found it to be slow and unreliable. Infact when it is refreshing with the server, your ability to multitask on the N900 is taken away.

In comes Cotchin!, a web based app for Foursquare which can be used to going to cotchin.com/m from your N900. It uses the Geo-Location extension of the N900′s MicroB browser to locate nearby venues for checking-in. Even on a slowish connection, it is fast and also offers the ability to look for your friends, at your history, search, shout and of course check-in.

A simple tap on the ‘Places’ button brings the following up within seconds.

You can tap on a name to check-in. Also tap the Facebook and Twitter buttons depending on whether you want the notification sent to the respective service. I love this feature.

Clicking on ‘Friends List’ brings a list of your foursquare friends, sorted by the time of check-in. You can also use the search function here.

The ‘Me’ reveals your history, mayorships and badges.

To use Cotchin! on your N900, you will need to install the Maemo Geolocation plugin if you already haven’t. You will find it in the Application Manager’s repositories. Alternatively, download it from here and install.

When you open cotchin.com/m on your N900 for the first time, you will see the above popup, select ‘always allow for this site’. The developers have pledged their support for the N900 and promise features like mini reviews, an enhanced history page and enhanced venue search in subsequent versions.

In my opinion, it is currently the best way to check-in from the N900.
