I'm pleased to announce version 3.0 of Browser Switchboard (formerly browser-proxy), a program which lets you use Tear, Fennec/Mobile Firefox, Midori, or other alternative browsers as the default browser on Maemo devices.

The biggest change from the previous stable release (2.2) is the addition of a control panel applet for configuring the default browser -- there's no longer a need to create or edit a config file from the shell. There are no user-visible changes from the 3.0rc1 release.

Source, prebuilt packages for Diablo, and EXPERIMENTAL prebuilt packages for Fremantle can be downloaded from Garage: https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=1159; or from the extras-devel repository. Installing the package will take care of installing and setting up Browser Switchboard for you.

Full instructions for configuring and using Browser Switchboard, along with instructions for compiling and installing it manually, are available in the README file: https://git.maemo.org/projects/browser-switch/?p=browser-switch;a=blob_plain;f=README;hb=HEAD

Vagalume is a player for Last.fm and compatible services
This is a bugfix release, with only these two changes:
 * Fall back to the old streaming API if the new one doesn't work
 * Install data files in /opt in the N900, since the rootfs is quite small

I've just released a new version of MRAWViewer: v 1.1-1 is now in extras-devel as well as in the download section of the project homepage.
There are some improvements and new features; among the others:

- zoom in/out using volume keys
- larger image details layer
- last image opened is stored using gconf and automatically loaded upon next startup
- support for device orientation

Latest version in extras-testing is still 1.0-maemo7 which is pretty stable and usable, but lacks all of the new functionalities.

As some of you have already noticed, PyQt is back after a long update hiatus. PyQt has a new version (4.6.2) available in extras-devel of both Diablo and Fremantle. It also has a new port maintainer (yours truly), so expect updates after PyQt releases. To install the basic core+gui combo, just type:

apt-get install python2.5-qt4-gui

This particular release is linked against Qt 4.5 shipped in the SDK, but will work with Qt 4.6 just as well (the libqt4-maemo5-* packages).

Happy hacking !

[sharing-plugin-gallery2] New project

About the project:

Initially, this project contains a "share via service" plugin -- http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Maemo_5_Developer_Guide/Using_Data_Sharing/Sharing_Plug-in -- for Maemo 5, to upload files to a Gallery 2 -- http://gallery.menalto.com/ -- web image album, using the Gallery Remote protocol. I hacked together a rudimentary implementation over the weekend, and tested it in the Maemo 5 final SDK. It seems to work for the most part, but I'm sure there are all kinds of bugs and omissions.

Later, I guess I will also consider supporting Gallery 3 when they get that out, in case it doesn't support the same "remote control" protocol.

About the very-beta release 0.1:

The basic functions are there, but strings are not localized, the user interface is not intuitive, and there's no help in sight. It also hasn't been tried on a device, as I have no device to try it on. If you feel like testing it, here are some pointers:

- The "URL" field in account setup should be something like "http://www.example.com/gallery", so that "[url]/main.php" finds the Gallery 2 script. Some trivial fixups (missing protocol prefix, main.php included in URL, extra slash at end) are handled automatically, though.

- The name of the album to which the pictures will be uploaded should be given in the "Album" field. If the name is unique (over all the albums the user can write to), a simple name is enough. If not, use a path like "Foo/Bar/Baz" starting from the gallery root. Album names with slashes in them will not work. The name used is the "title", or "display name", *not* the "path name".

- For rudimentary security, https URLs should be used, though I have no idea whether things like self-signed SSL certificates fail when using the SharingHTTP module. Probably. Also, the user name and password are passed with a GET request, so they might easily end up in web server logs. This should probably be fixed.

- "strings libsharing.so" reveals that there is some sort of system which makes it possible to specify "updatable"-style options to the shown-when-sharing "Options" dialog, using a sharing_plugin_interface_update_options function. This could be used to provide a dynamic list of albums so the manual "set album name in account setup" trick would not be necessary. However, that particular function (or the service description XML counterparts) is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation, so supporting this will happen in a later release.

- The source .tar.gz should be buildable with the usual "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -d".

A new version of Free42, a HP like calculator for N900. Major difference to previous (N810 et al) versions is a new vertical layout and overall improved skin graphics.

This release still misses few features like program import/export and preferences settings dialogs. But otherwise considered usable and about done.

The biggest issue is how the vertical layout interacts with screen rotation and thumbnail task switcher view. If you try this out you will see what I mean. Let me know how to make it look more sane.

Hi,

The project was inactive for a long while, because I got frustrated at the performance of gcompris on N810.

Now that N900 is here, I ported it to Fremantle. I uploaded gcompris 8.4.5 to Fremantle extras-devel. All dependencies can be found from extras-devel, too.

gcompris performs much better on N900, though not silky smooth.

Todo items:
* Upgrade to latest gcompris (8.4.12 or 8.5 series)
* Enable background music
* Make it install into /opt
* Improve performance, especially sounds are sluggish
* Include the locale files as submitted with bug report

My test cases before uploading consisted of my 6-year-old daughter playing 30 minutes with it and she was happy.

Remember, install a sound file for your language (gcompris-sound-xx) and then gcompris.

Best regards,
Terje

Over a year ago I wrote the same application in Python for N810. It was very slow to start and UI was not very attractive.

About 6 months ago, I decided to try creating a Qt application on Fremantle. Just to test if it was possible. Thanks to the Qt4 for Maemo garage project, it was. With some limitations but still possible.

The 1st version is very basic but stable. It only requires the GUI Qt library from Qt4 for Maemo project [1]. Since it is 4+ MB, I could not upload it here. Don't know where the latest is located now. I have built it from git [2].

[mafw-gst-eq-renderer] mafw-gst-eq-renderer 0.1.2009.38-1-1 has been released

mafw-gst-eq-renderer 0.1.2009.38-1-1 has been released.

mafw-gst-eq-renderer is a fork of original mafw-gst-renderer that comes with MAFW package. It
adds a 10-band equalizer to the renderer.

Two versions of the package are provided:

- 'MTR' flavour: this version adds a new renderer. Use this if your player is able to handle several renderers.

- 'MGR' flavour: this version is intended to replace mafw-gst-renderer, providing the same functionality. Use this if your player only handles mafw-gst-renderer.

See README to get more information.

What's new in 0.1.2009.38-1-1?

* First release
* Based on mafw-gst-renderer 0.1.2009.38-1
* Added equalizing support
* Created a Control Panel to set equalizer
* Add predefined presets
