Good but needs a few tweaks. I'll leave a comment on TMO.

As for the missing cursor, being application-specific, there is not much that can be done. Perhaps another note of warning? Its up to you. The issue is not a blocker IMO.

Also, I am not sure how/where to point for more USB-HostMode information. Perhaps use a wiki like kernel-power or simply add to package description.

Thanks for your response @Ivaylo.

Most folks probably know that hostmode is not supported. I simply noted the possibility for some to not understand the additional pieces that the app requires in order for USB to work.

Actually, I am not directly testing the dependencies in this case. The dependencies automatically move into Extras when extmou does.

As for the options, an enhanced description would be sufficient for my +1 vote. Withdrawing the app from testing would be a net loss to the community. This is a very useful package! Thank you for your efforts!

We would like to see more apps moved to Extras from devel instead of the other way!

I know about the tmo thread, I feel the package interface helps better in communicating version-specific issues.

Sorry it took so long to get this tested I was waiting for my A-A adapter that took forever to arrive. :)

Perhaps on the next version, we can encourage the TMO thread subscribers to test, vote and help this get into Extras faster.

Ok, I see your points, but let me disagree with some them.

extmou does not need h-e-n or kernel-power to be installed to work, it is hardware that needs it (in case of USB mouse of course). Bluetooth ones does not. Neither extmou has dependency on KP or h-e-n. While you are right that description could besomehow confusing, it seems strange to me that anyone trying to use USB mouse with n900 is not aware that he/she needs special cable/gender changer and special software (kp46 and h-e-n). If we follow such way of thinking then next question is - does such HW+SW is approved by USB.org . And as far as I know reason that we don't have stock USB OTG/hostmode is that Nokia has failed (or did not attempt at all) certification with USB.org.

Anyway main purpose of extmou is to support ANY mouse attached to n900. This could include whatever strange piece of HW or SW that one can drive to pretend to be HID mouse device. And because by now the only devices that I am aware that can be connected are USB and BT that is why de description mention them. But I am OK for short note in description.

Re missing cursor in some applications - it is QT to be blamed for that, any QT application on n900 sets its cursor to "blank" on startup and insist on that. And some GTK ones too. If you consider that as a stopper I am OK, I don't like incomplete applications too :). But yes, that is how they are developed. Not much to be done.

In addition I wonder why we are focusing on extmou package, the real "support" is in xserver-xorg-input-evdev-mouse and libconbtui0-hid. All job is done by them. Hope you are reviewing them too, as extmou just gathers pieces.

So choices (as I see them are):

 1. Me to withdraw extmou from testing and leave it in devel. One more application in devel should not bring harm.
 2. Me to make another version with your note "Host-Mode needs to be enabled in order to use a USB mouse", so no one could get confused. No further instructions as I am not sure which is correct place to point anyone at. Please advice on how to proceed further.

And please review packages extmou depend on, it does not make sense of extmou in extras and its dependencies in testing.

BTW do you know extmou thread on TMO?

Leaving for now as my GF is becoming nervous.

 • sorry for the multiple posts. it looks like my message got truncated:
 • "If a short and prominent note/warning along the lines of "Host-Mode needs to be enabled in order to use a USB mouse" is added to the description, users would know what they are getting into. Information (link?) to further installation instructions would go a long way in a better user-experience."

 • Just want to elaborate on the cursor issue I noted earlier. The cursor is not displayed in the menu of h-e-n but clicks do get registered.

 • @Ivaylo, the Testing team had reservations with this package reaching Extras as is because USB support is currently not available in Extras or Extras-Testing. And requiring an Extras-Devel package would be a blocker.
 • We were in agreement though that a minor change to the description to make it more accurate would make it acceptable for promotion.
 • If a short and prominent note/warning along the lines of "Host-Mode needs to be enabled in order to use a USB mouse". Information (link?) to further installation instructions would go a long way in a better user-experience.

 • More importantly, it looks like in order to get this to work, packages in extras-devel need to be installed. This would be a blocker as a 'Lack of advertised features', because there is no other way for an end-user, who has only Extras enabled, to use this feature. The user is most likely to conclude that 'it does not work'. I suggest that the reference to USB in the app-description should be removed temporarily until h-e-n reaches extras-testing. I am considering voting down and will send an email to the testing-list (testingsquad-list@garage.maemo.org) to see what other testers have to say. You are welcome to join the discussion.
 • Thank you.

 • Ok. I got my USB mouse to work (yay!). Here's what I did:
 • install extmou from extras-testing.
 • reboot
 • enable extra-devel
 • install h-e-n. This install KP-46 as a dependency
 • reboot
 • connect the mouse and start hostmode with h-e-n
 • I don't see the cursor in some applications (h-e-n) and status-menu. is that because the way those apps are developed?

 • So let me summarize:
 • HEN is REQUIRED for a USB mouse
 • KP-46 may be required if stock kernel does not support the mouse
 • I have a USB mouse, and it seems that HEN is available in extras-devel. I didn't expect to enable extras-devel for testing.
 • Thanks.

Instructions here - http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing

Yest, it works on stock kernel, one need to install KP-46 if it is unlucky to have mouse that does not work with stock kernel. Re HEN - only if you want to use USB mouse. BTW there is extmou thread on TMO, all this is written on its first page

can you provide instruction on testing? does this work on the stock kernel? or does it need the power-kernel-46 + h-e-n etc?

thanks!
