A gift to me (can be) a gift to you...

Yesterday, you might remember me mentioning that Nokia was sending me a gift for helping them do some testing. Actually, it wasn’t Nokia, per se, but a friend, one of the fine people on the maemo development team, Jake Kunnari. Anyway, I was thinking that the gift would be a T-shirt or something — you know, just a small gesture of thanks.

Oh, how I was wrong…

Last night, I was completely taken by surprise when a package from Nokia arrived at my front door. When I opened it, I was even more surprised to find that this “gift” I was told about was, in fact, another Nokia N810 Internet Tablet!

What?!

I mean, I was glad to help test, and it’s nice to get gifts, but this (in my opinion) is way too generous… Even for a big company like Nokia!

So, after thinking about what I could do with two N810s (which, honestly, I couldn’t really think of anything, especially since I also have an N800), I decided that I should donate it to a deserving software developer. But, I need your (fellow Internet Tablet and maemo enthusiasts) to help me figure out who this deserving recipient is…

It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone who is part of the maemo community, but it should be someone who wants to develop — or someone who would take an interest in developing — for the community. Likewise, I would rather it be someone who could develop something that is not currently available for maemo in some way, shape, or form (yes, this is a tricky aspect, but I can think of a few things), but that’s not entirely necessary. Lastly, whomever this person is, as “payment,” should be able to provide some sort of road map for how their development would proceed. I don’t mean that I need a complete run-down of every aspect of the intended application(s), but I would like to know that I’m not just giving the Tablet to someone who only has good intentions but may never follow through.

Oh, and there’s one more caveat. I am the benevolent dictator in this “contest.” This isn’t a democracy. If I think that the person/project is worthy, then I will decide.

So, let me know who you think this noble soul should be. Also, if you’d like to submit your ideas for possible applications — either currently in existence (for Linux, Python, or whatever) or not — please include links if the application does exist somewhere.

Update: Jake Kunnari & Quim Gil (of maemo development fame) have offered to help me judge this “contest.” In talking with a few other people, I’ve decided to keep my mind open for a few days (at least), so please keep the ideas rolling in!

Update #2: There have been so many great submissions here that I’ve decided the deadline for this “contest” will be Wednesday, January 30. I will close the comments at COB CST. This will give us a few days and a weekend to decide on a winner… Meaning that the announcement will be made, Monday, February 4. So get your ideas in!
