Install this package, then check this plugin in Pidgin's plugin list. Afterwards, Pidgin will show up in your Maemo 5 status area and status menu.

There's a new version in testing. It supports blinking and tap-and-hold on the button itself. Check it out: http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-testing_free_armel/pidgin-maemo-docklet/0.0.2-1

on my n900 this plugin doesn't work at all... "Internal error. Application closed"
