Put applications menu into sensible categories.
Catorise puts the applications menu into a series of sections, matching those used in the Application Manager to install it. As packages are installed and removed, the menu is kept up-to-date. To revert to the Nokia-supplied default, simply uninstall.
This is based on the "MyMenu" concept by manzn.

Thanks for this app. Its something that should have come built in with the N900 but wasn't. Thank you for filling the gap and thanks for the helper app to sort out the categories, much quicker than having to log into root and edit a text file.
BTW, is there any option to add your own category + Image?
For those people who are not familiar with linux like myself, but want to move icons around in catorise: 1. Make sure you got 'rootsh' installed. 2. Open up 'X Terminal' and type: vi /home/opt/catorise/menu 3. Press 'i' to edit using your keyboard. Touch 'Esc' on the screen to finish editing then press 'Shift' 'zz' to save the session. 4. Type 'sudo' to gain root access. 5. After the new promt type: exec /opt/catorise/catorise 6. Wait. In my case since the new patch, it usually closes X Terminal and the changes in the Catorise GUI are not obsolete until connecting to a pc. It might be just me though. Ps: Love the Maemo community and looking forward to MeeGo and Moorestone...
I love it. Looks really cool and saves me time. In some cases it would be very useful to have a customization option.
I really like the new organization with this app. One issue/thing i noticed is that when you go to add new shortcuts from the desktop menu, you get doubles of things like "calendar" or "contacts" etc.
Not entirely sure if your app causes those doubles..but it wasnt like that before i installed it.

Great app that makes the many applications conveniently arranged. @Colin Baillie @Andy Pham: I have the same probem as Colin that even when changes are saved, the app does not move to the indicated folder, even after switching off/on the phone.
New update makes this now work perfectly - an essential addition to the N900, which makes it easy to find any applications, should have been a standard to the phone, if you only install one application, this should be the one - excellent and thanks!
Great app (should be great on the 1.2 when gets out as well) but moving stuff does not work for me either.. if there would be some sort of GUI or just added option of moving stuff it would be awesome (thanks).
Excellent product, but I need some help to Andy Phams comments regarding moving the icons - Shift+ZZ saves the changes, but does not move the icons into the specified folder!
Great app. I Just think that "WifiInfo" should be in network, not in Utilities. Changed this by modifying /home/opt/catorise/menu, though.
@William Liu: You can move things, rather simply.
Just open X Terminal and do
vi /home/opt/catorise/menu
Use arrow keys to scroll, press 'i' on the keyboard to edit, 'esc' on the touch screen to exit editing mode. Shift + ZZ to save and exit.
Sounds complicated, but very easy.
Nice application and tidies up my icons, but I would also like the possibility to move icons to another folder. Sometimes when I install games from Ovi store it gets places under the Ovi folder, but really I would expect it under the Games folder.
Seems to be a great app, just what I was looking for, but what I would like to be able to do, is to move apps to differnt folders, for example "electric beams", "bounce", "cube", "disks" all appear in the OVI folder, whereas the should be in the GAMES folder - can these be moved, and if so how, simple language please. All the same excellent!

As soon as the N900 fills up with applications this is a necessity.
This is what Nokia should have done. Trying Catorise in real life makes you realize how much easier it is to find applications when they are in sensible categories. It feels like a new version of Maemo really. ;)
What I also love about it is that developers can dictate the category for their applications via the "Categories=" entry in the desktop file. They mighn't even know... Should be communicated. Here's a sixth star: *

I'm really hoping for a GUI for editing the menu, so you can add in your own folders and move things around with a GUI.
I know you can edit the menu file... but my linux is so rusty I can work out how to get to the file, and I can view it with cat, but pico doesn't work, and I can't remember exactly how vi works, so I can't work out how to edit it like I'd want to.
Say I wanted to move Gjiten to a Languages folder, so the line in the menu file would be:
gjiten: languages
How would I do that with vi? Or would I use another command?

This is a great app to keep all apps organized. It doesn't seem to put the apps in the same categories as the Maemo site though. For example, Qstardict appears in office on the Maemo download site but appears in Utilities in this app.
Great app! Should be compiled into the next update as the standard menu setup.
Very useful, a GUI editor (Maybe like Personal Menu for OS2008), would be a nice addition.
I know the categories are based on the repo selections, but it would be nice to be able to simply alter the location of a shortcut. Otherwise, ace!
@Paul, after editing /opt/catorise/menu, you have to run (as root), /opt/catorise/catorise. The creation of a GUI editor seems inevitable; the bug with missing icons should now be fixed and applications downloaded from Ovi will appear in the "Ovi" category before v1.0.0.
A great application to have an organsied menu automatically
This works great! The only caveat is that because of the way it categorizes apps, its usefulness is largely dependent on repository QA. This means that it might stick things from -devel in weird places, through no fault of its own. Otherwise, full marks - it makes things manageable, and looks prettier than the stock menu doing so. Yet another example of the awesome things people can do with a hackable phone!
It seems like a good idea but I'm missing some applications in the various catogories: for examples, I can't find AngryBirds or Mahjong in the Game category. To get them, I hqve to go the 'All' actegory.
I have tried to edit the /opt/catorise/menu file as Marcin have suggested: I wanted to add mahjong so I added mahjong_startup: games in that file and restart the whole unit... it doesn't seem to be taken into account.
Anyway editing such a file by hand isn't really user friendly. So great concept, but it would be really nice to be able to move apps around interactively. May be a long touch on the app icon -> contextual menu "Move to category" -> category selector or something like this.
At first I was a bit suspicious, but now that I have it installed, it just great. Brilliant! I wonder why Nokia didn't take this approach! It really makes sense to have the apps in the app manager and app menu organized the same way!
Excellent utility. My screen was also corrupted, but reboot fixed the issue.
A very good concept, but for some reason after installation on my N900, my display had been corrupted... So I had to uninstall...

@Johannes, it restarts hildon-desktop but shouldn't cause a reboot.
@Kevin, all the icons get put in the same section as their package in Application Manager and Maemo Downloads. The only exceptions are the built-in apps and Ovi. The latter will get better categorised in a future update.
Great application, though it would have been good to have known that it reboots the device during installation. Or did I miss such a note?
before this app i didn't know how to move around my icons on the phone. And i still don't know. - am i able to move them around, cuz not all the programs/games are in the right category..

Works well, and if you don't like it, you can simply uninstall it. One of the best solution for the Nokia default menu.
Catorise fixes my main gripe with the Maemo 5 applications menu - having all the crappy default applications up front, and hiding everything I install on the bottom of the "More..." view.
With Catorise everything is automatically in nice, clean categories by just installing the package.
Nice idea, neat implementation. A good alternative to the default application grid, specially if you install many programs. This is the kind of small programs that help you use your device the way you want.
I was after this very application to keep my apps nice and tidy !!!
