Complete offline geocaching solution

The GPXView application reads and displays geocaching.com GPX files and serves as a geocaching navigation tool.

Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's location online via sites like http://www.geocaching.com.

GPXView lets you import so-called pocket queries (detailed geocaching descriptions) from those sites and allows you to view the contained information in a convenient way. Furthermore, GPXView can guide you to geocache locations using your devices built-in GPS. It also features an embedded terrain map showing you the exact location of the geocache to find the best way to approach it. Once you've

I have tried to update it. But the entire maemo.org processing seems to be broken and i wasted several hours trying to get it to accept the updated geotoad.

I can't tell you when it'll work again or when i will spend more time trying to deal with this.

Thanks for your reponse Till :), do you have an idea when the next version of geotoad will be out ? as I look forward to using it

You don't have to reboot.

Also it's geotoad you are talking about, not gpxview. And geotoad is currently broken since gc.com updated their website again. I am preparing a new release based on the latest geotoad code. Geotoad should work again, afterwards.

email sent. i've tried several checks and gpx loads and stayed pretty surprised when the "wpts" has appeared. it was not there before. so after few tryouts I found that if I import directory where gpx file is placed, wpts tab is missing. if the exact file is to be imported, I'm able to see additional wpts in sepparate tab.

So I'll have to keep importing the files instead of directories. I don't now whether this is known bug or feature to you.

gpxview is supposed to display embedded waypoints in a seperate tab and also to select them whereever coordinates can be used. gpxview is meant to display all data contained in a geocaching.com pocket query gpx file.

Would you be so kind to send me one of those gpx files containing waypoints gpview doesn't show?

Till, regarding the multiple stages i mean additional waypoints. not always you have to calculate them, there are many geocaches when you have to visit several waypoints, without any specific order. For example GC17WBJ. There are about 12 waypoints which I can't be chosen in "GOTO" section (just to write manually the coodrinates). These are included in GPX file and many GC apps can work with additional wpts. I don't criticise GPXview, but I miss this feature. That's why I asked if this is on todo list. Also I'm not sure whether you have access to GPX files generated by groundspeak's GC webpage. If not, I can provide you with that (if you decide to lokk into this).

cheers!

GeoToad is slow by purpose, since it's spidering the geocaching.com web site. Spidering full speed is basically a DoS attack and geotoad tries to be as friendly as possible. It's meant to be used for small areas <2km radius for "instant caching".

I don't fully understand your problem with multi caches. You can overwrite the current coordinate on the notes page. So you go to the first stage, determine the coordinate of stage 2 and use that as the new overwritten coordinate. Once you reach stage 2 you replace the overwritten one with the one of stage 3.

Maybe you are asking for the ability to store several overwritten coordinates for one cache. Since you usually know only coordinate at a time and only determine the next one once you've reached the previous one i don't think there's much need for more that the current single slot for the overwritten coordinate.

i have tried geotoad and it may be useful especially for those who have not premium account but for me it's a bit slow when retrieving data. so i will stay with pocket queries generated on regular basis. anyway i have found the dir where the maps are cached, and i like that there is no limit.

but what i'm really missing (didn't realize that before) is lack of support of multi stages. or is there some feature? i like geomath tool to create alternate projection and somehow i was hoping that it will work with stages but i haven't find any feature to support this. for some caches is gpxview unusable now. is this on todo list, or any workaround for projection of stages?

There's no limit to the cache except the storage of your phone. But 32Gig sure is more than you'll ever be able to fill with map tiles. If you are afraid to run out of space, then just have an eye on the 32g data partition (the first entry visible under settings->memory).

Regarding "live downloads": That's what geotoad is for. You need to install it from extras-devel and then go to "tools->geotoad" in gpxviews main menu. It will then allow you do exactly what you are asking for.

Hi Till, this is 5-star app. I like it so much. I was so happy after I realized that maps are cached and I was able to use them without need of data roaming while outside of my country.

I have a question regarding the cached maps - how large is the cache for maps? I don't have idea what I may expect during the offline caching.

another Q is related to list of caches - do you plan to implement some downloder for them or it will depend on pocket queries for ever? Coz it won't be bad if the app would be able to download/update caches in some specific radius from current position.

that's why I have installed AGTL which does this job pretty well.

anyway, THANKS for this app!

Very nice App! Great work. Is there a way i can get coordinates of stages of a multicache in the go view with copy and paste or something? Because on most Multi caches around here there the coords to the cache itself are useless, you need to walk to the coords given in the stages.

But Thank you for the great app.

The circle in the precise position view visualizes all positions it received so far. If they are all within a small circle the result should be pretty accurate. If the circle containing all the dots has a very big radius then the resulting position is probably not so precise.

And this feature is in fact not meant to be used when sewarching a cache. It's for people hiding a cache to allow them to get a precise position. In the end of course this also helps you find a cache if its given position is precise.

I've been trying to figure out how to use the 'precise location' feature in the tools menu. it seems to average many consecutive GPS location readings over time, which makes sense to me - but there is a circular graphic that changes on the left while running, and i don't know what that is. also, i don't know how to make GPXView use my newly acquired precise location in order to better tell me how far from the cache i am. i understand or course that i will not be able to get direction data while this tool is running (and that i shouldn't be moving) but i'm lost as to how to actually use this feature to aid in finding a cache.

Following links has been implemented in the next release (atill in extras-testing). So has text selection for plain text. however this is limited by the current maemo version. The next firmware update is supposed to solve this (see https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4619).
